True this game was very hard to solve. My nephew had it and we had a lot of trouble trying to solve it. The music really rocked. The story in the game wasn't bad either and I think they made a few more MYST games, and there was a literature book written too.

It took a long time for me to complete MYST solo, years after playing the first time (and failing to leave the first island), I came back to it and realized the game subtly tells you exactly how to solve the puzzles...since so much of the MYST series revolves around books and journals I decided to write up my own journal complete with diagrams of all the puzzles and solutions...after that, only took a few hours.

Very, very true. All of this. o_o
I couldn't solve any of the puzzles alone, much less read any of the handwriting in the game.

The puzzle that burned my brain the most was the Rocketship Piano. I'm pretty sure I am tone deaf, I certainly have NO musical training, so remembering the exact sequence was, well impossible. Others though filled me with glee. The sound tower puzzle, that was incredibly satisfying.

LOL! I loved this. I though you were going to be tough on this game until I saw slide number 7. Yet slide number 7 made sense. Get ridiculed for playing a subtle, pretty, and smart game in this low brow blockbuster gorefests. That game was confusing!

yea, i played the game and tried to do it without using the manual or any hints... took me 4 days to figure out ONE puzzle because each puzzle has like 150 combination's and only one works, AND there are absolutely no clues... they should have at least done some vague wall writing to help a little...

Lols.

I don't know what everyone is talking about when they whine about obscure puzzles though - it's all pretty straight-forward, really (except maybe the underground tunnels in the Spaceship age.) Read the damn journals in the library and everything pretty well explains itself.

HAHA! Love it!

To those who haven't heard of Myst: It's old. Like 15 years old. Get Realmyst instead from Steam. It's like 5 or 10 bucks but it's definitely worth it with full 3-D, voices, and animals. I think it would be better in most ways.

Lol this reminds me of how i felt when i played the game. xD
remember the mechanical(or whatever it was called) Age? i couldnt figure out how to get from island to island in that Age. after consulting a guide i'm like "how the hell was i supposed to figure out that control was supposed to be used in this way to turn the entire !@#$ main island around?!"

aaaaah!! i never get tired of viewing this!!

except for the exhaustion it incures from laughing so hard!
this comic is hazardous to my health... every time i view it i just about split my splean!!

i know few people who have even heard of MYST let alone played it... Myst is one of my all time favorite games, and you've captured the frustration and the beauty of it just about perfectly!!

i love in all your "how to play" comics how you are able to get so much expression out of such a simple little stick figure blobby doodle guy!! i love him!!

If you ever have kids...NEVER teach them the secrets to videogames. They either need to win on their own...or completely fail....on their own.

I think my Dad had a box set or something of the different ones. I remember one time when you looked down there was a dead guy... (at least I think it was MYST). But I digress, we gave up on the first one before we ever made progress.

And I'm curious, did you just scan and ink this in photoshop (or GIMP)? Because honestly your HTP (and a few of your funnies) are so simple yet brilliant

I totally agree with this, especially number 4. I've played a lot of similar styled games, including Myst sequals, and nothing really ever beat it.

XaviaPhoenix [2010-03-06 20:43:04 +0000 UTC]

I actually really hated that game, because to pass it and collect all the puzzle pieces that you need to advance, you pretty much have to follow the guide WORD BY WORD. Upon attempting to play it, i got stuck in a temple and didn't have the stuff to either move on or go back and get what I needed. Either way, this explains the playing of the game perfectly. While it can be infuriating, it's freakishly hypnotic and WILL earn you some hate for liking strategy games.
