I've played most of the mist games, they're not impossible to figure out. It frustrates a lot of people though because it doesn't drop the answer to a puzzle in a single place. Sometimes you have to put the answer together from multiple sources. The funny part is that after finishing the original game, you realize you could have beat the whole thing and gotten the true ending in like, five minutes.

Two minutes. Β I've seen a YouTube video of someone doing a speed run of the original Myst, and he solves it in a few seconds less than two minutes.

But then you miss the fun of figuring things out and exploring all the different areas.

Hahahaha... these are all so true. I actually dreamed of some day buying a small island and reconstructing it to look like Myst Island.

But I have to say that I liked Riven the best. The first two were definitely the best, though.

I played Myst on a Macintosh Performa 450 in 1994... didn't know I finished it because Athrus (that son of a... ) said his wife was still imprisoned somewhere. Still scared about the skeleton lamp!

Woooow.... I remember playing that game on a Panasonic console when I was like.... Seven, eight maybe? My dad was a dumpster diver and brought junk home all the time, one being a box full of weird video games and a system no one's ever heard of lol. Fortunately the Myst game also came with a strategy guide lol, beat the game in like six minutes flat. It was nice, agree with the music bit and I definitely would like to take a vacation there.

I agree with most of your points... Number 5 I certainly agree with.

But Number 7 I never could agree with you on... I loved the SCENERY of Myst - I utterly hated the puzzle stuff.

I detest puzzle games with a passion - and Myst started that trend. The sheer stupidity of some of the clues and nonsensical nature of them made me swear off the genre for life.

Nice, funny, and true.

I personally wish I could still play realMyst (IMO the best version of the original), but my system is too new, and I don't have an XP virtual machine (XP being needed for 3D acceleration because, you know, 3D)

Is it bad that when I glanced at the 7th panel, I thought it was the clock tower?

There is now realMyst Masterpiece edition. Β You can also get a port of realMyst and a port of Riven on iPad.

Lmao - all so very true. I'm from Australia so calling it Dunny in the original version of Myst was priceless "did you bring the page?"

Btw have you seen Cyan's Kickstarter for their new game Obduction? If not check it out at www.kickstarter.com/projects/cyaninc/obduction

We need all the Myst fans we can get!

I beat Riven, Myst III: Exile, Myst IV: Revelation, AND Uru without access to a guide. Β I played the original game with my significant other who looked up a hint when we hadn't spotted a control in Stoneship Age.

Rhythm-Wily In reply to SirenDrake [2019-02-02 20:40:24 +0000 UTC]

I think the problem I had with the original was doing the music puzzle. I couldn't quite get it right. I don't know if it was because I was playing it on the PSP or what.Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SirenDrake In reply to Rhythm-Wily [2019-06-09 20:52:21 +0000 UTC]

Part of the problem I have with the music puzzle is that I'm never entirely sure how many increments I've moved the sliders. Β Of course if helps if you took band or chorus in school and know how to read music, and a lot of people didn't. Β I gather several people found that puzzle frustrating.

The maze is another one people struggled with. Β First time I played the game, I actually completely mapped out the maze. Β It was only later that the ex and I figured out the navigation trick.

One of the first games available for macs, so awesome.

My mom bought the guide (was her game) but the whole thing was in "journal" form, as in the guy you are playing is writing it like journal entries. Interesting but confusing.

Of course you can beat the game in about 10 minutes...

TangleKat In reply to SSBrosB [2013-05-20 03:21:11 +0000 UTC]

I own and have read the gamebook for Riven, and it's set up in much the same way (but with a regular guide in the second half. I loved just reading the journal-style version as a kid, and I still do.

I have two guides and after playing for 30 minutes with limited knowledge gained, I fear I may have to crack one or both open.

My 11 year old, of course, almost beat the game in one sitting.

I loved this game, and panel 6 is my sore point to this game. Why did the Miller brothers come up with such a "crap" name for an advanced civilisation's name.

"RealMYST" was pretty good too.

My number 5 was the stupid gear mechanism in the clock tower -_- I got there was like "Ok, simple enough, get the three numbers to show the code i have." I nearly went mad when I found out via a walkthrough that you can hold the lever down and make it move more then one slot xAx

Holy crap! I've actually got a box of Myst somewhere around here that's unopened!

I should open and play my brains out for a week. It's a game where you think?!? I haven't played a game like that in ages! How I miss those days.

I remember playing Myst as a six year old child, and wondering, "What the HELL am I supposed to do? Are there zombies to kill? Treasure to find? Points? WHAT?!" But after a while, Myst just begins to sink in - it's a relaxing, curious game that allows one to think (very, very) outside the box.

It's so true for number 5...there were a few puzzles were I was like, "OH. OHHH. I see what you did there! The little boat is a replica of the larger one in the dock, and if it floats, the big one floats too!" And a few that just made me go, "What?"

I've barely cracked Riven for the iPhone - I need a guide. .___.

May be the part where you find those two derpy brother's father?
Or...finding the last page...my cousin ruined that part.
He had the statagy guide, I was only a little ways in; but no...he had to show me that you could flip to the very last page and skipp every other step of the game to get the ending...
