Description The scene takes place in the FF12 version of Ivalice, in a time before the airship and the destructive mimic germinites. Trains still reign as a reliable form of transport that carries a large load of passengers and freight. The skillful moogles being the builders and operators of these machines. The four moogles in the picture crewing a local freight hauled by an F class 2-8-0 (the letter F is designated for all freight engines, with P for passenger and E for express).

But within a few years the scene will change and these proud railroading moogles will see their well-kept steam engines disappear in favor of the harnessing of magicks for power - and later even these will fade into history as the faster and more comfortable airships take their passengers and cargo, and the metal rails disintegrate as they fall prey for the germinites...

Ah now, but what about all that Jagd the airships can't get through? And you'll never beat a train for efficiency and speed with an airship, especially when you consider you can just keep adding carriages to the end of it (tractive power permitting) and carry more and more. Only a fool allows the railway to die. Keep shoveling, kupo, I might just need to use this in my fangame.

TBH, that short snippit is just my way to achieve a smooth transition into the official FF12 world and storyline. But yeah, just thinking about Archadia, Rossaria or Dalmascas war machine and its needs would justify a great amount of rail transportation. And all the bulk loads like coal and ore needed for steel production, magicite for power etc.
Ivalice would benefit from a proper rail network... but we all know the lack of trains and the menacing germinites are just there to validate an all-airship world, Square didn't want any land vehicles to butt in. The only train I've seen are the mining carts and the elevated railroad in the Archades cutscenes.

I've tried to find a good example of modern civilization that would work without a rail system, and I just can't get it to work! Any way you twist and turn it, trains would come into existance one way or another, realy. v:

If you wanna use steam trains in your game, that's cool, kupo!

The game is going to be Tactics-based too, so there will be some good old-fashioned train hijacking missions. Imagine trying to regain control of an engine at the front of a train when your clan has to start in the caboose.

Sounds like a FF Tactics version of good ol North vs South on the NES. Hoshit I remember raiding the trains in that one.

Except you're the defending party, not the raiding one. Further, I plan to incorporate a mechanic whereby upon sighting a potential obstruction (i.e. raiders) you have the option of applying emergency brake and stopping short of it (and hence dealing with the obstruction in battle on the ground) or opening the regulator wide and ploughing straight through (with a risk of derailment proportionate to the magnitude of the threat and the amount of deviation from a straight line the track exhibits at that point). Let's see an airship manage that kind of awesome.

Seriously though, trains are a big-ish part of the thematic material of the story, as well as the best way to get around Jagd-infested Kerwon, where the game is primarily set.
