Description This image is taken from the developing artwork for the Arcos MK I Technical Manual and shows one of the three life support units that is installed in the ship. This unit is designed to take the internal atmosphere of the ship, process it, adding humidity factors, heating or cooling the atmosphere, and of course, scrubbing it so that waste gases are exchanged for breathable ones. It also removes particulates, including carbon and toxic gases.

The top images show the unit as it exists with a two meter tall human for scale. Environment within the ship is ducted from beneath the floor in all sections into vents, and then transferred to the environmental unit (one is operational at all times, with two in reserve) and once introduced into the unit, the air is cleansed and then ducted back into the ships chambers via a dedicated ventilation system.

The ventilation system can be sealed off on a compartment by compartment basis, also, individual settings can be changed within those compartments to make the atmosphere hotter or cooler on demand, and also to change the humidity of the atmosphere. The larger images at the bottom here show the interior workings of the environmental unit, with the end view revealing the circulating fans that are designed to move the atmosphere and to capture particulates which are subsequently shunted to a toxic storage tank in the bottom of the unit (ringed around the induction port) where they can be detoxified or vented overboard.

The large motor assemblies at each end circulate the atmosphere, cleansing it, adding moisture and are fed by the large collector housing in the units lower end. There is a tank attached to the unit which contains pressurized atmosphere to be released into the system should the primary atmospheric source be unavailable. This back-up system ensures that even if the vessel's atmosphere is vented and replaced with vacuum, it is possible to introduce a atmosphere to any given compartment, although if the entire ship is required to have atmosphere, it can only introduce sufficient amounts to make the air barely breathable, but this is enough to keep the crew and passengers alive until the second or third environmental unit can be activated.

Adding auxiliary features is an Outland Industries trademark. In the case of the Arcos most of the systems are designed to run with a primary, secondary, and an emergency auxiliary should the primary and secondary be knocked out or are otherwise unavailable, and for this reason it is very hard to completely knock out an Arcos.
