Description The freight elevators are an integral part of the Outland Industries Arcos MK I star freighter and make it possible, in part, to load and unload the vessels payload from the primary hull. In this diagram (a section through the body of the hull revealing segments of Deck01 and Deck02) we can see the elevator in its deployed and stowed states.

When the vessel is sitting on the ground or at an orbital port, the outer hatches on the primary and secondary freight chambers unlock and slide into the hull and this makes it possible for the interdeck elevator platform which is normally stowed on Deck02 (as a part of the floor) to descend and ascent down an open shaftway to ground level.

This is accomplished with the simplest engineering of all - high tension cables, each with a maximum breaking strain of four hundred metric tons. The elevator when in the deployed state can be loaded with cargo rated up to two hundred twenty-six metric tons - no more, although this is simply for safety reasons as the tractor emitters inside the freight chamber on Deck02 are rated for a maximum shearing force for a load of no more than two hundred fifty metric tons.

Using the emitters it is possible to quickly move and relocate cargo within the freight chamber. Cargo is introduced into the vessel via the hatches on its underside, then brought up to the freight chamber. When loading is complete the elevators are locked off - bolts slide into place on all four faces to prevent motion during flight operations, and the external hatches shut and seal, also locking into place restraining bolts.

NOTE: the internal detailing on the diagrams shows paneling, piping and conduits typical of this class of vessel (on Deck02 much of it in the freight chamber is designed for high speed impact resistance) and humanoids are two meters tall for the sake of scale. Unloading is simply the reversal of the loading process, and with an expert crew utilizing mek labor, a fully loaded freight chamber can be unloaded in under three hours, twenty minutes.

ADDITIONAL: I've noticed a low inspection count on this image, but it does not surprise me as only engineers could get excited by such stuff, or indeed make sense of what they are looking at. If engineering isn't your thing - I understand but to me, its my religion.
