Description

This was a pretty straightforward task - clear out a lair of Hobgoblin bandits and brigands who terrorized travelers and merchants in the area.

The party managed to get a drop on the Hobgoblins in the guardroom, where Tobias taunted them with Minor Illusion of himself, standing on top of one of their spike traps.

"Ha! You nincompoops can't even set your traps right!"

When the first guard fell for the ruse and into the trap, the party then barged in and made short work of two more. The fourth attempted to flee and bar the door leading deeper into the lair, but Angela, thinking quick, stabbed her longsword between the planks of the door. It was a disadvantage roll... which resulted in a devastating hit. The moment she pulled the sword back out, Tobias, the diminutive Harengon wizard, quickly darted between Angela's legs and blasted a Firebolt through the pierced door.

Several more Hobgoblins who gathered on the other side were quickly defeated - the skewered one found slumped against the wall, dead from bleeding out.

Angela, who during the earlier adventures had been rather excessively worried and fearful for everyone's safety, unsure of her fighting skills, was beginning to find more confidence after scoring some impressive feats - such as elegantly dispatching multiple enemies in a single turn, between her main and opportunity attacks.

This newfound courage was slightly tempered in the deepest, sealed portion of the dungeon where the Hobgoblins feared to tread. A flight of stairs suddenly tilting and turning into an oiled slide dumped the surprised girl into a locking spike trap.

The unfortunate adventurer found herself in excruciating pain, pierced through the abdomen with a pair of large brass spikes, the last bit of light mercilessly cut away when the trap door shut and locked above her, and feeling the pit filling with... water? Oil? Would she be incinerated to death if she tried re-lighting her drenched torch?

Struggling to overcome the crippling pain, Angie grabbed one of the spikes and discovered that by applying enough strength, it could be twisted. She proceeded to painfully unscrew both, each turn an agony. Finally free from the bottom she could roll over on her side and push the spikes out. Soon after, her companions above, after a frantic search managed to locate a lever that finally opened the trap door, and Angela could finally be pulled out.

Whew... no big deal, nothing a nice healing potion can't fix!

What doesn't kill you, only makes you stronger. Or so she was told.
