I believe I just looped it round and then glued it down.

If you like unnamed Use the japanese word. Don't know it though.

Nanashi is the word. Lit. "nameless"

Unfortunately, I haven't had much time to practice. We've had terrible weather for the past couple of weeks (and not enough room inside the house to really let loose), and before that we were dealing with my grandfather's funeral (and the subsequent emotional fallout). That, and I've just been really tired lately. One thing after another piling up has worn me down. I've got another week of vacation coming up mid-October, though. I plan to make lots of time for myself, and that will give me some free time.

This will be useful. [link]
Vacation? I've heard of that.
If you get down play REM's Everybody Hurts. Great song. Can't get a link to work on it.

Amazing!
How exactly did you make the Saya? It looks awesome!

Thanks
The Saya is made from two pieces of wood, one thin, one thick. The thick piece has a grove chiseled out, and the thinner piece glued on the top.

I could give it a name, if you want. Just tell me what it's supposed to do, and I'll come up with a Japanese name.

for the tsukamaki I think I have finnaly found a good alternative for ray skin you know what they use to wrap the handles before the tsukamaki goes on, its where the colour fully comes from

actual ray skin, is expensive, much more than leather so thats out of the window. However you might find this at your hobby craft.
I was down my art store and find some decorative paper. However this paper had embossing with all those little bumps just like you see on ray skin on katana's. When you run your fingers over it you can feel all the little bumps. Not only is the paper thick it comes into a variety of colours and can easily be glued on the sides of the handle ^^

Looks pretty cool~ I love the wrapping. How about O'Shira for the name? It has no meaning, just gibberish I created. You can keep the name if you want.

This is great, thanks very much for the extra photos! I know I said this already, but the finish is really great. I kind of like it when the wood grain shows through, I think it gives it a certain texture you know? How is the spray varnish to use? I thought it wouldn't come out as nicely, but it seems like it definately worked for you. I think the tsuba is awesome too, I can see you put a lot of detail into it. Wonderful job again, and thanks for sharing your techniques!

The spray varnish is a polyeurathane varnish.
I find I have to keep the item level so it doesn't run all over the place. And don't worry if it looks a bit thick in places, it may look cloudy but it dries completely clear.
