Description
For my next and last Halloween themed piece for this year, here's a question who should you fear more? the monsters or the man who creates them? That's right I've drawn Frankenstein both the doctor (who's not an actual doctor in the book but a college dropout) and his creation (I still call him Frankenstein too since I don't care about technicalities though I do like to call the monster Adam).I actually want to make my own comic adaptation of the Frankenstein story. Ever since this one conversation I've had about what if Disney adapted certain stories and at some point Frankenstein was brought up, and while thinking about how I'd imagine Disney would adapt the story of Frankenstein it got me thinking about how I'd personally adapt the story. Now it's a comic I actually want to do someday though kind of on the backburner due to me wanting to priortize my own original projects but since the story is in the public domain I do intend on connecting my own adaptation to my original projects in some way (so for that reason please don't suggest ideas for how I can approach a Frankenstein comic). For how I'd approach a Frankenstein comic, I'd mainly stick to the original Mary Shelly novel in terms of plot and characters, but would still have a few elements from the movies such as the creature being brought to life by lightning, Frankenstein's Castle, Igor, the creature's fear of fire, and the occasional angry mob chasing after the monster, along with my own original touch. I'd also play up the mythological paraells, hence why I included the original book's alternate title "The Modern Prometheus". Also maybe give is a sort of steampunk style.
I'm actually quite pleased with how the picture turned out. For how I approached each of the designs...
The Creature: He's closer to his book counterpart, where he's actually intelligent and well spoken with a massive grudge against his creator for bringing him to life and abandoning him to a cursed existence where he's constantly feared and hated by those who see him, and therefore wants revenge against his creator (though he might have been like his movie counterpart early in his life before he developed his mind a bit). He's of course a big guy made of sewn together human bodyparts with sickly green skin like most depictions of the monster. He's only wearing a loin cloth for a few reasons, 1) he's a big guy who had to live out in the wilderness fending for himself so I'd imagine it wouldn't be easy for him to find clothes that fit, 2) Also to show off the details of the creature more. His eyes are yellow to reference how the book would emphasise them when describing the creature's appearance. The red spots are actually burn marks, they're there due to a part of the story I have in mind where Victor in response to the horror of what he's created decided to try and kill the creature with fire by burning down the lab. Mainly to explain the creature's fear of fire. Also wanted to include some steampunk elements but didn't want to just give him robotic limbs, so I sort of reimagined the bolts from the movie version a bit. Also put a lightning shaped streak in his hair to reference the fact he was brought to life via lightning.
Victor Frankenstein: Again like the book version, so in other words a bit of an asshole, I personally view the character as someone who wants the fame and gratification of making a massive scientific breakthrough but none of the responsibilities that come with it, though I'd still make an effort to give him a sense of charisma when he's interacting with his friends and family. One idea is maybe also have him study Alchemy and utilize a combination of ancient alchemy practices and modern (for circa late 1700s to early 1800s) scientific methods to create his monster. For his design I wanted to make him look weak and scrawny, to for one make him contrast with his creation. But also because he's a bookish type in the 1700s who has a tendency to faint a lot in the book, so I think it's safe to say he's not very physically fit, it's also why I gave him a pale complexion. Since the book's alternate title is "Modern Prometheus", so I figured I'd reference Prometheus in Victor's design. In case you don't know Prometheus was one of the Titans from Greek Mythology who stole fire from the gods to give to humanity, and was punished by Zeus by being chained to a great boulder where everyday his liver ripped out by a giant eagle (who I think is supposed to be Zeus in the form of an eagle). So in reference to Prometheus I gave Victor's hair a sort of fire like quality to it, right down to making him a ginger. Also just so you know I do intend on making plenty of references to Prometheus in this comic (like for example a nightmare sequence where he recieves Prometheus' punishment with an eagle version of his creation).
I think I might draw my own take on Dracula next year. Might turn this into a Halloween tradition, where I draw my own take on a famous universal monster every October.
Edit: Note: Please no discussions on whether or not the monster should be called Frankenstein.
Frankenstein and related characters are in the public domain. Original story created by Mary Shelly.
Movie version owned by Universal Studios.
