Merry Christmas Everybody! What's a better way to kick off the Holiday Season then doing my own take on the second most Horrifying thing about the season, the demon of Christmas himself The Krampus! (in case you don't know the first more horrifying thing is Black Friday Shoppers)

I view this as a sort of companion piece to my Santa design from last year: www.deviantart.com/jordango/ar… . So I pretty much reused the background from it for this piece. I actually wanted to make this last year in addition to my Santa but sadly didn't have the time. So basically when I decided to make a companion piece for my Santa design I could have gone with someone like Mrs. Claus, maybe some elves, reindeer, or even my own take or the likes of Rudolph and Frosty, but nope I decided to draw the big scary monster. I don't know why but I've always had a sort of fascination this character since I first discovered him.

For those who don't know, Krampus is a half goat half demon monster from Alpine Folklore who accompanies Santa on his yearly run who acts as a foil to Jolly ol' Saint Nick. You see while Santa rewards good children every year with presents, the Krampus punishes the ones who've been Naughty. He would punish them by beating them with rusty chains and/or Birch Rods, or if you've been extra bad he'll stuff you into his basket and take you to the pits of Hell. So in other words you don't wanna be on his list, that lump of coal in your stocking doesn't seem so bad now does it. There's actually a tradition in Alpine villages called Krampulslauf where a bunch of young men dress up as the Krampus. There's actually several different Santa companions who punished bad children from several different regions such as the Yule Lads, Belsnickel, Gryla the Christmas Witch, The Yule Cat and so on. The Krampus is just the most famous one, having a bit of a surge in popularity in the 2010s even getting his own movie in 2015.

For my design I took some influence from the 2015 movie version with the cloak, since I felt that would work well with my Santa. I also changed his Goat horns to Reindeer antlers to make more thematically in tune with general Christmas lore it's also why I put a star shaped lock on his chains. I also gave his chains a red glow to give the idea of them being magical in nature (I'm thinking that the chains are also how Santa keeps him under control). I also included a basket with a child Krampus kidnaped, I kept their face shadowed so you could imagine just about anyone there to emphasize how scary the Krampus is. Like it could be any of you in Krampus' basket there. So be extra good this year and leave out an extra plate of cookies just in case Santa decides to bring an old friend.
