Description

Some bits of the animatic I made as an intro to my "The History Of Sally Acorn" YouTube video that I'm working on.

Never stop the #Rally4Sally! Sally Acorn is the female lead of the Sonic The Hedgehog TV series and comic book series from 1992 lasting up until 2015 where the comic was silently cancelled. She has over 25 years of history under her belt, yet she was cast away by SEGA and sweeped under a rug despite how much her and the original Sonic The Hedgehog comics influenced Sonic to this day. (A good example is his love for Chili Dogs).

Sally Acorn is the leader of a small group of heroes known as the Freedom Fighters, the original resistance against Dr. Eggman's world domination plan. Not only have the Freedom Fighters lost their friends and family, but Sally was originally the princess of the Acorn Kingdom of Mobotropolis, which Eggman made his headquarters, renaming the capital region into "Robotropolis" instead. Unlike most Sonic characters, Sally uses her wits over strength or special powers. Sally is a strategist, utilizing a smart-computer by the name of Nicole and commanding her team consisting of Sonic, the speed and strength of the team, Tails, the tech-savvy, airborne genius, Bunnie, the half-robotisized power-house and country-girl, and Antoine, a cowardly swordsman and royal guard, turned brave over the course of the comic. There is also Rotor, a mechanic and snarky walrus. Sally is one of Sonic's best friends and a big sister figure to Tails after he lost his mother and father, reading stories to him and taking care of him. Over the course of the comic, Sally and Sonic wind up in a relationship which had its ups and downs.

The relationship of Sally and Sonic is one of the lead reasons why people dislike Sally's characters, who also cite her outfit, slightly bossy personality, and Issue 134 of the comics as reasons why Sally is not a character who should return to the series. Also, the recent change of Amy Rose's character to take a role very similar to Sally's makes people claim that Sally's role has been taken and thus, her inclusion into the series is redundant.

Firstly, Sally is a very serious and straight-forward character. She can be bossy towards her team-members and get frustrated with Sonic. However, these are flaws that make a character like her more interesting. She isn't always pleasant and enjoyable, similarly to how Tails can be cynical, or Amy (at least during her Adventure era) can be bratty when things don't go her way. She is a very caring woman and dedicated to her cause to overthrow Dr. Eggman's rule and rescue the kingdom that her heritage makes her responsible for.

Sally's outfit varies over time, however the most common depiction shows Sally wearing a vest and boots. Unlike other female characters that are usually fully clothed, Sally has a bare body which is more like a male Sonic character, who are a lot more rare to wear clothing. This offends people, who call her naked, or call her muted, grounded color-scheme ugly.

Finally, there are moments within the Sonic The Hedgehog comic series that people cite as reasons for Sally to be despised. The most common example is Issue 134, also dubbed as 'The Slap'. In it, Sonic and Sally get into a verbal fight when he wants go to battle Eggman after being severely injured and assumed dead. His arm is also in a cast. Sally pleads for him to stay, though Sonic declines. Sally calls him selfish, slapping him across the face, which is when the situation escalates. Sally leaves the scene crying, and multiple characters, including Amy, come to console Sonic. The issue was written by Karl Bollers and Jon Gray and stands as one of the worst issues in the entire 25-year-run due to severely mischaracterizing Sally in order to force her and Sonic to break up. According to multiple sources, Mr. Bollers planned to have Sonic cheat on Sally with Amy, and Jon Gray has been accused of making the scene more dramatic, which was originally written to be more subtle, adding the physical assault done by Sally.

To read about the issue itself you can visit its page on the Sonic Wiki. sonic.fandom.com/wiki/Archie_S…

There is a YouTube video done by Dumbsville that goes into depth about the fiasko. It is quite amusing and yet sad at the same time, but I recommend that you give it a watch. Note that jabs at the Sonamy fanbase are a running gag on his channel and he does not mean offense to any fans of the Sonic and Amy ship. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mh3Iw4…

Additionally, Sally has been depicted as a visually unpleasant and mean character on multiple occasions such as Issue 89, where Sally is seen pointing and laughing at Sonic, the notoriously ugly Issue 156 and issue 222, where Sonic is seen running with Sally, with Amy watching in surprise in the background.

The original Sonic The Hedgehog comics have been made fun of for multiple strange or poorly written/drawn issues. However the comic has given many opportunities to artists and writers from across the world for better or for worse and while the comic has awful issues, there are also truly fantastic ones which I cannot recommend enough. Did you know that Ian Flynn originally wrote Sonic fanfiction and drew a fanmade comic? If Archie Comics didn't hire him he wouldn't be writing for IDW's Sonic The Hedgehog today!

Not to mention that the original run lasted for over 25 years, going over various trends and going through various different arcs and alternate universes to explore the craziest and wildest Sonic stories to date. Comics resorting to strange issues is not a rare occurance. Such a thing happens with heroes such as Spiderman and Superman all the time. Did you know that Professor X once melded his mind with a pidgeon or that the Joker has eaten the entirety of China while making remarks about chinese food? Superhero comics are weird and sometimes offensive too! Batman's sidekick Robin was beaten to death after the comics before it opened a poll where people could send in votes on wether or not Robin would die in the following issues. Guess the result!

While it is fine to dislike Sally Acorn for her character and not want her to take place in the current Sonic The Hedgehog series she is undoubtedly one of the characters within the series that deserves respect and rememberance as a part of Sonic The Hedgehog's history. Do help Sally and fans of Sally by spreading the word about her. But please be civil. Be respectful and spread the love! Feel free to use my image.

She's been my comfort character for over 10 years and I will defend her until the day I die.
