Description

I've seen a lot of redesigns of Princess Sally go around ever since her new design was revealed in 2013 for the Archie's Sonic The Hedgehog Comic Reboot. Personally, while I'm not going to go after anyone that likes Modern Sally, I am not that fond of the redesign of the character, which prompted me to make a redesign in 2017 which is what I would've imagined for the character at the time.

My goal was to combine aspects from all parts of Sally's history and merging her Classic Pre-Reboot and her Modern Post-Reboot design into one neatly wrapped package.

For example, while I kept the clothes of Modern Sally, the face was a lot more unique and the shoes were a mix of Pre-Reboot Sally as well as an even older design of Princess Sally where she was pink. The design was used in the pilot episode of Sonic The Hedgehog (SatAM) in 1993.

While I was satisfied with my design for some time it kind of started fluctuating when I drew her recently for my Sally Acorn Documentary and when I found out about #Rally4Sally . Since the design was fairly old I felt it was time to revise her design a bit for 2021 in case I draw her again (and I might. She's fairly easy and fun to doodle).

In this particular design I went over everything again. I really enjoyed the more slanted face I've given my 2017 design since I don't like the cheek fuzz of the Classic Sally design, but Modern Sally's face was unpleasantly round. It's a healthy middle and kind of reminds me of Cream, but looks unique enough to stand out. I was fond of Sally's eyelashes being the same color as her fur and having a longer snout. I find that it makes her more recognizable, as I felt that Modern Sally failed to capture the same feel as the clever and confident woman that I felt Sally represented. She went from looking like a 17-year-old to a 14-year-old like Amy. Sally's tail is small and arched, taking some inspiration from Knuckles, Sonic, and other characters with pointy tails.

I've toyed with the idea of eliminating or simplifying her hair, but I personally enjoyed her hair and her haircut felt too iconic to remove, but if it means anything Sally takes the same approach here of having a stripe go down to the tip of her tail that is the same color as her hair. I know that a lot of people enjoy Sally being a red-head, but I feel that a bright red doesn't look good in her more calm brown and blue color-scheme, so it became auburn.

As for Sally's clothes, I wanted to go for more of a bold redesign instead of just mimicking Modern Sally. The reason for this is that I really grew to dislike her strange yoga-shorts which for some reason feel a lot more oversexualized than when Sally was wearing no clothes at all. Her gloves were almost identical to Amy's or Tikals and given that I don't like Amy's design much at all I wanted to move Sally away from it further this time. I understand how many fans are put off by Sally's lack of clothes though and leaving her nude felt unoriginal. I have been seeing a lot of Secret Agent movies and came to think that (my) Sally has a loose resemblance to Rouge. This inspired me to give Sally a body-suit like hers with free arms that would lead into a set of gloves, adding a bit of Sally's fur color into the rest of her body so her head and tail wouldn't look out of place. The iconic vest fit over it nicely, but it can also be taken off and the design won't look too offputting without it, referencing how Sally would sometimes take off her vest in the last few Archie Comics. She would also retain the stripe that Modern Sally's pants had without her outfit looking like some strange set of yoga-shorts. Sally's boots are a bit more based on her modern design, however using arched decor instead of the strange and ugly rectangle that Modern Sally as well as Antoine have. The colors are mostly based on Modern Sally.

Finally, I want to mention that I LOVE Knights. The Sword of Acorns is an awesome sword forged from the royal crown of the Acorn Family as well as the sentient, omnipotent matter from which everything in Sally's homeworld is made. How cool is that? Not to mention the Sword was sentient and did the entirety of Sonic And The Black Knight before Sonic And The Black Knight were even a thing. Sally being a modern Knight was basically the theme I wound up going for, since I also like the idea of a Princess also taking the role of a Knight and fending for herself.

While the Sword of Acorns has a variety of power in the Archie Comics, I'd like to tone the sword's magic down in my interpretation. My version of the sword can amplify and utilize Chaos energy for offense. This could also lead into things such as ripping deeper into dimensional tears like in the comics. The sword is not sentient, but it still has a cleansing ability. It's not exactly healing, but it can be considered a reset button. It's a little difficult to explain. Perhaps I will change what the Sword of Acorns does but for now I'll stick with this.
