Description 11x14" paper! Professional graphite pencil kit! Next level drawing apparatus is complete!
The library in Canterlot we saw in the first episode, where our favorite egghead dwelt all day reading every last book in the library. Can you imagine such a feat?
I gave it a more steampunk/victorian feel to it, as if this was how it looked way back when.
I'm not gonna lie, I don't really like this one. Didn't turn out right. It's probably my lack of experience with actual art pencils.. I'm not sure if I should keep using them or not. Or maybe it's because this took me what seemed to be forever to finish it and that set my standards ridiculously high. Maybe both? well, whatever. Hope you like it more than I do.
Completion time~ 28 hours over a period of 6 days.
Oh, and heads up- the download is ridiculously massive. Proceed at your own risk!

Thanks! It's not really that I don't like the drawing itself, as opposed to the idea that this could have been so much more. All my other drawings were done on paper half this size, so my expectations naturally were set higher. And I'm glad you like it!

Don't give up on pencils just yet. Or ever! Maybe take them out on a nice day (or inside on a rainy day) to do some light drawing and refine your skills. Seek out other pencil artists and compare techniques. (Not just the one I mentioned before but do some digging.) It's more than just an additional skill set but it'll teach you a lot about lighting and texture that will be useful later on.

Oh, and did I mention keeping up on life drawing?

Sure, this has a darker feel to it than it should for a nice day just before 2:00 PM, even with the wood in place of marble, jade, etc., but it's certainly more grand and posh, more aristocratic. The comfy couch and nice fireplace back away from the stacks is as good an architectural/layout concept as it is wonderfully rendered. Also, good work on the multiple sets of vanishing points and pretty good work on the (semi-)circular perspective for the upper right.

If I had to pin anything down, I'd say that it comes off as too dark and likely because you're not trying enough "extended" shading techniques, like nibs and tissues and even finger rubs. Maintaining things like the great floor textures may be tough, but if you can't get away with less definition (just "hinting," and that goes for the bulk of the books too) then perhaps make a point to use the harder leads with a softer touch — that void crossing the left handrail sticks out pretty fast. Some of it may be because of the type of paper you're using.

Just for laughs, here is one of my warmup & doodle papers (scanned too dark unfortunately). (I do lines, circles, etc. for hand control after regaining neuro function, but then I like to fill in the cells with weird doodles. I hate wasting paper. Anyway, my baluster in the bottom right is less than 2" and probably took about an hour to do, plus I bet the shading and lighting source aren't at all right. I may have used my pinkie to smooth the inside a little bit, but most of the smoothing and highlights were done with a kneadable (squishy and formable) eraser.

I bet I spent about an hour on just that one little thing.

So to me it's a miracle that you can fit so much beautiful, fine detail into a wonderfully composed piece in only 28 hours. Seriously, all the way down to the contents of the desk, the plant, the scrollwork on the top of the file drawer and picture frame, even a fireplace set, city view, leaning books here and there, and that stylized telescope platform — then the telescope itself!

Maybe it's not perfectly perfect, but it is a fine piece of work plus a fantastic (and yes, necessary) step towards mastery over graphite.

When I read the 2nd sentence I swore it was gonna end with "and spend some quality time with them." Anyways, Thanks for the in-depth critique! I'll definitely look into some shading techniques cause that's where I need work on the most. And I'm glad you like it!

It is kind of what I mean, but I didn't want to get too silly. Actually I did but somehow managed to be a bit more serious.

If you ever want some not-so-good examples to pick through I can point you to someone who's refined his pencil technique from fairly rough to beautifully rendered effects over the past several years. Yet most of his work is lacking in composition, anatomy, style, meaning, and definitely in range. So it's not like you must become a Pencil-Technique Berserker as if your life depends on it, especially since you list yourself as a "hobbyist." However if you ever need to make a quick sketch for or during a presentation then it'll be a breeze.

My god until i zoomed in i thought that was a gun turret on the balcony XD, I find it difficult to think of the words to describe this so i'll describe it in a more practical way *Cuts right hand off with a hand axe*,

This is awesome!!, as always ^^, you're too judgemental!, it's natural for artists to dislike their finished work but this is beyond judgement, the only thing i really notice is the lack of the josh stump XD

Thanks! I apprecia- Wait.. what are you doing with that.. OH GOD WHY! WHYYY THERE WAS NOTHING PRACTICAL ABOUT THAT
But anyways, It's not really the drawing itself, but the idea that it could have been so much more. Oh, and about the stump, I was thinking of putting a painting of a stump where the Celestia picture is, but that would have been weird. Lol

Man i can relate, sometimes when i submit my stuff i think "shit should've added something better", but i notice it already has some views and faves and i leave it XD, Well i suppose Celestia deserves a spot in her own library ;], i guess we'll just have to wait for pinkie and twilight to sneak in and swap it for your trademark stump XD /)

I say keep up with the new gear, or at least don't abandon it entirely. I've vastly enjoyed these pencil sketches and this by for the most detailed and best yet.

I simply love this take on Twilight's home, even the liberties taken with it's design only seem to enhance.
