I was once horribly addicted to this game. In early 01'. In terms of actual gameplay, I find it somewhat lacking, as I do with pretty much all of Square's RPG's. But the story is possibly the best I've ever encountered in a video game, and the game produces some of the most complex and interesting characters video games have ever witnessed. If this story were a novel, with all of the game-specific elements removed, I would say it was a very good, true science fiction novel. It's also like a game with a message.
I've showcased all the major characters here. They are:
Cloud Strife, dead center at the bottom, the game's "hero". Cloud may very well be one of the best and most complex characters ever to appear in a video game. His character design is another thing. That guy is way too puny to be lugging around that ridiculous sword.
To his left is sweet Aeris Gainsborough, the uber-cute loveable sweetie-pie chick who everyone just adores so much and she just loves life and all that. Not to suggest that I don't like Aeris. You really can't not like Aeris. The first time I played this game, after she died, I was hoping I'd be able to kill Sephiroth's punk ass right then and there. It WOULD be a character like Aeris who dies.
And then there's Tifa Lockheart, on Cloud's right. I initially wasn't going to put her in this picture, since I already have 2 drawings featuring her on DeviantArt, but she's one of the main characters, and I certainly never grow tired of drawing her. Tifa's hot, but there's nothing else you can say for her. The game manual described her as "always optimistic". She's not. She's constantly depressed in the game. All she cares about is Cloud. She literally says that word-for-word at one point, "all I care about is Cloud". She's just a typical hot broad with no self-esteem who lives for some dude. Fuck Tifa. I wish.
To her right is Red XIII. I used to really like Red, until DeviantArt all but destroyed him for me. Too many weird dog creatures all over this site with spikey hair, and usually you get the vague impression that the "artist" found the image erotic. Whatever, I still like Red. DeviantArt and it's purverts can't change that. Not going to lie, every time I play this game and I get to the part where Red meets his father, I have to fight off the urge to cry. Especially when Red lets out that howl. I guess it's because I love dogs, so I sympathize with them more.
Left of Aeris (her left) is Cid "Highwind". Cid's just awesome. He's just this regular guy who smokes a million cigarettes and cusses and falls asleep all the time. If I was ever to cast a live-action Final Fantasy 7 movie, Dennis Leary would have to play Cid. He is Cid.
Behind Cid is Barret Wallace. He's pretty badass, even though the game likes to make him act doofy from time to time (in nearly every Final Fantasy game, there's some big tough guy who's doofy as hell and fights with the protagonist throughout the game). Nothing ever goes right for Barret. His hometown burns to the ground and, for some reason, he, and everybody else in the town, blames him. His people in Avalanche all die. His daughter gets kidnapped. Then when he finally reunites with his friend Dyne, Dyne commits suicide. Everything sucks for Barret, because he's black.
To Barret's right is Caith Sith. Everyone acts all astonished in the game when they first hear Red talk, but nobody seems to think anything of it when this talking stuffed cat shows up, nor when it forces its way into your party, nor even when they find out it's a spy. They just don't seem to give a shit. And you're going to tell me not Cloud nor any of his friends could tell this thing was a robot/ toy? It had to have seems. Whatever. Cait Sith is really fun to draw, however, I don't think I've ever used this guy for more than 10 seconds in my primary party anytime I've ever played this game.
Behind Barret is Yuffie Kisaragi. She's a little brat. Everytime this chick comes along in the game, you know something obnoxious is going to happen. She's pretty awesome, though.
To her right is Vincent Valentine, this uber gothic dude who transforms into beastlies and all this shit. He was originally supposed to be a standard party member, and not a secret character, but for some reason I don't understand, at the last minute, Square realized this wouldn't work. Whereas Yuffie has no direct involvement in the story, Vincent reveals considerable bits of information throughout the game, particularly concerning Sephiroth and Hojo. He's pretty cool, I guess.
And then up top is lame-ass Sephiroth. Everyone loves this guy. I don't. He's SUPPOSED to be lame. He's just a dopey crybaby who feels alienated from the world because he's a freak experiment, so he reads up on all this shit and completely misconstrues everything and goes around killing people while claiming to be something he's not. What a dork. He's the same thing as Cloud but he never admits it. Jenova and Hojo are the real villains.
And PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE no comments asking me "where is (your favorite character)?" Not trying to be a dick, but I ALWAYS see this stupid fucking question anytime somebody does a group fanart picture, and honestly, the answer is always going to be the same. If you want to see a Final Fantasy 7 picture with (your favorite character), go draw it yourself and share it with the world. This is mine, and these are the characters I chose to draw.
