Description Now here's a Greek epic I know virtually everyone is familiar with. It's standard curriculum in most high school English classes. Homer's "The Odyssey".
That's Odysseyus looking heroic at bottom center page, and I realize he looks a lot like Russel Crowe in "The Gladiator". Athena is the lovely goddess behind him (sort of presenting him). In the story she acts as his sort of guardian deity.
In either top corner are Scylla (multi-headed dragon creature, left), and Charibdis (whirlpool generating creature, right), the sort of catch-22, damned-if-you-do-damned-if-you-don't duo. The half-naked babe who looks an AWFUL lot like Nabooru from Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is the temptress/ goddess Calypso, whom Odysseus spends about 2 years living with/ fucking before he decides he misses his wife enough to take off. The angry-looking redhead babe is the witch/ goddess Circe. She turns Odysseus' crew into animals. Then Odysseus fucks her for what he think is 4 days but it turns out to be 4 years. The guy with the flaming head and a face like Phanto from Super Mario Bros. 2 is Helios, the sun god. In the book, the remainder of Odysseus' men are killed off when they eat Helios' cattle. I prefer the TV mini-series' take on this, where they all fall victim to Scylla and Charibdis. It's far less ruthless than "they ate my fucking cows? Aw man, fuck that. They're all going to die."
And the woman working at the quilt is Odysseus' enormously faithful wife, Pennelope, who has about 100 suitors living in her house, but she never cheats on Odysseus once in 20 years, which is more than Odysseus can say...The image I'm depicting is Pennelope erecting a quilt during the day to mourn the alleged loss of her husband, only to take it apart every night, in order to forestall her having to marry a suitor (there's these old Greek laws of hospitality. It's a long story...)
And that man's face at top center seemingly comprised of water is, of course, raging god of the sea Poseidon, who almost singlehandedly makes Odysseus' 20 year journey home after the Trojan war a living hell, because "wily and clever" Odysseus decides to condescend and tell Poseidon off after beating the Trojans.
Making all that water was a lot of fun. The poor quality stone texture in the background of this image is just a rock I scanned and attempted to spread around. Yeah, it looks like shit, but the rest of the picture is very much to my liking. Enjoy.
