I suddenly heard something far in the distance, like a whisper carried on the wind. Something that sounded like a nightingale.

A mysterious rolling mist suddenly rolled over the mountain top and snow began to gently fall from the sky.

Then the air was filled with the sound of deep beating wings.

I strained my eyes to see through the white haze when, out of the mist and swirling ice, giant claws, feathers and beak, broke through the mist with a gallant cry. Its enormous wings blew away some of the mist, showing off its full size. It was glorious!

The bird landed gracefully onto the icy plain and I felt a shudder through the ground as its claws made contact with the rock.

I was frozen in awe. It was an Articuno.

Quan-Jii walked calmly up to the bird and stretched out his hand. I was terrified the creature would kill him but instead, it dropped its head down and let the old man scratch it under its giant chin like a dog or cat.

Its blue feathers shimmered, catching like metal in the sunlight and its long ribbon-like tail softly hung over the edge of the cliff, blowing in the wind. The crest on its head lifted and fell as it looked around the snowy peak, it was clearly curious to our presence.

Then it raised its head and turned to look towards the horizon. It let out a beautiful cry that you could feel vibrate in your chest.

What I hadn’t realised at that moment was that it sensed something that we didn’t…
