A neighbour of mine, Mary, gave me a call last week saying she had spotted something strange a few blocks down from our street and needed me to come right away.
When I arrived she pointed to a big plastic suitcase in an alley that seemed to be moving with puffs of smoke seeping through the zips. There was a padlock on the side and I couldn’t see any holes in the casing, whatever was inside, someone had locked it in there on purpose.
I pulled out a pair of pliers and flame retardant gloves and quickly got to work. A plume of smoke and embers billowed out as I flipped the lid open. The smell of burning plastic filled my nostrils as I wafted the smoke away.
Curled up in a ball with its legs tucked under its chin was a young Growlithe. I carefully lifted it out to look it over. It had some molten plastic in its fur where it had tried to burn its way out of the case but thankfully wasn’t hurt.
I took off my jacket and scooped him up under my arm. I could feel my heart racing and a wave of deep anger rising in my stomach. I tried my best to focus on the pup rather than the monsters that did this to him as I made my way to my front door.
Once inside I set up a sand bath for him (avoid cleaning fire types with water) and brushed some ‘flame oil’ through his fur, making sure to get out any of the plastic that remained.
I was glad to see he was eager to eat and drink when I gave him a bowl of water and some leftovers I had in the fridge. Making him a bed in the living room, my Ditto ‘Squeak’ took particular interest in him. It curled up next to him and watched as he slept.
In the morning I could hear the sound of clicking nails moving around on my wooden floorboards downstairs. I came down to find that Squeak had transformed into a mimic Growlithe and they were playing together, having gotten into the toy chest. My intention was to re-home him, but they both got along so well that I eventually decided to keep him, naming him ‘Toby’ after an old friend of mine.
