I had been invited by the master of the Fighting Dojo to come and see his prize winning Hitmonlee.

Hundreds of years of selective breeding has changed Hitmonlee's physiology dramatically to specialise them in martial arts. There are no records of what their original forms looked like, but legend has it that the tradition was started by the Emperor's personal guard.

Their legs and forearms are covered in a thick keratin that helps disperse the impact of powerful blows. There are myths about Hitmonlee whose legs turned into springs, allowing them to kick further. Strangely this myth seemed to make its way into the public’s psyche and to this day people are confused when they are confronted by the real Pokemon.

Another myth that still resonates is that they don’t have nostrils or a mouth. I can, however, understand where this comes from as they are very difficult to see! They are so thin, it’s hard to spot them at a distance. This is due to Hitmonlee's being fed a ‘liquid diet’ of soups, rich with proteins and herbs. It is an ancient tradition that is still practiced today meaning that their jaws and mouths have become smaller and their jaws weaker to the point where they are nearly non-existent.

He led me to the room where the Pokemon was being trained. It moved with such tremendous speed it was almost a blur. Around the room were a number of wooden blocks and posts that it swiped and kicked at with its powerful legs.

When I asked how powerful its kicks were the Dojo Master smiled and held his hand in the air. Immediately the Hitmonlee stopped in its tracks and turned to face us. Swiftly he directed his arm at a very large timber post in the corner of the room. The Hitmonlee moved in a blink. Before I knew it, it had swung its leg high and moved so fast that the wooden post shattered in two. I was taken aback...
