Description

An old friend of mine called me out of the blue, asking me if I’d like to come and spend some time with him at his home in the Fuchsia Hills. He owned one of Kanto’s most prestigious Vineyards, along with an impressive Apple orchard. Truthfully, I was due a vacation, so I jumped at the chance.

When I pulled up to the main house I was greeted by my dear friend Alejandro. He walked right up to me and wrapped me in a huge hug, nearly taking me off my feet, he had always been a big hugger!

Lunch had already been prepared on the veranda and I met his lovely wife Olivia, who brought out a number of bottles of their finest Wine and Cider.

In passing, Alejandro that they had a 'Pokemon problem’. My ears pricked up. Even while on holiday, the researcher in me couldn’t help but get excited.

He told me that a Pokemon had been breaking into the orchards and stripping the trees of fruit.

I offered to go out and take a look and see if I could figure out what was stealing all the apples.

We drove out to the Orchard and took a look around. The trees were watered in sections by a sprinkler system, so the ground was wet and muddy when we drove in. Having a look around it wasn’t long before I noticed something strange in the mud. Round padded footprints were scattered around a number of the trees, however, it was the thick saliva that hung from one of the branches that tipped me off. It was a Lickitung.

Then we spotted it. The large reptile was using its enormous tongue to reach up into the beaches and pluck fruit from the tree. Their tongues can stretch to roughly double their body length (around 7ft). They are incredibly strong, holding weights of up to 60 pounds. It was incredibly dextrous, far more than our own, wrapping around branches and shaking the apples free. They use their tongue for everything, so much so that their forelimbs are hardly ever used and over hundreds of years have reduced to simple nubs. Some researchers theorize that eventually, Lickitung might eventually lose their arms altogether.

Lickitung are Omnivorous and are known to eat pretty much whatever they can get their hands on. They can secrete toxins into their saliva that can cause paralysis, but generally, it just leaves a tingling sensation. They were almost hunted to extinction in the wild as this toxin was used in a variety of anti-aging products. Now of course it has been replaced by man-made chemicals but Lickitung numbers never truly recovered.
