Metapods are Caterpies in their Metamorphasis state.Technacally as they can use moves like harden and reflect they are 'active pokemon' but to be honest there a little bit useless. The moves are natural defenses to protect the Cacoon that Caterpie is in.
Metapods are Caterpies wrapped tight in hardened silk.
It has an 'immatation' eye that is used to proctect itself against potential predators. The caterpie inside can detect danger and use its moves it attacked but it cannot actually see through the eye.
Unless the caterpie evolves in a trainers care they will naturally attach themselves to tree branches away from the dangerous forest floor below.
If a caterpie evolves while with a trainer they are advised to take it to an incubation centre where the men and women at the centre will care for it untill it becomes a Butterfree.
Overall Metapods are pretty usless in battle so this is highly recomended.

nice pic dude. just a little unimportant note. metapod can learn harden but not reflect. it really doesnt matter but i thought i would just point that out. i gotta admit that metapod are pretty useless. i personally prefer kakuna more powerful and cooler looking cause it learns poison sting. but whatever. nice artwork though anyway.

Metapod's really a cocoon? Caterpie may have been shown surrounding itself with silk when evolving, but metapod looks much more like a chrysalis to me. I've seen chrysalids just like metapod. Also, would a cocoon be able to be green?
In any case, good explaining. ...Though in the real game, not sending metapod into combat will keep it from evolving for good. The pokemon world is a weird, weird place.

Yeah, what would happen if the cacoon broke in a battle and the little Caterpie inside got screwed up in its tranformation?

well 1 they would be poo in battle, 2 they shouldnt really be used in battle and three if that happened the butterfree wuldnt survive

Very interesting story behind the metapod. The description about the eye is a nice touch since they nver really say anything about it in the pokedex.

Awww, poor little useless guy. I would love to have one so it can evolve into a Butterfree. Hey, I am a sucker for cute Bug pokemon.
