Description
Dragonite, some of the rarest pokemon of all. Once thought to be legendary until the successful training of Dragonair began in captivity.Dragonite are strange creatures, they are what's called 'mimic' animals. A creature which mimics another for defense or aggression to ward of potential threats. They almost completely change from their previous form. It is seen that they naturally mimic Charizard's, their bodies changing, growing limbs, changing colour as a defense against many larger ocean threats such as Gyarados. It tricks the predators into thinking they are more dangerous than they are. However this has puzzled scientists for some time as they are more than capable of protecting themselves.
These changes have come as a great advantage to the Dragonite. It allows them to travel far more easily on land as their newly grown limbs can easily hold their weight.
Though they are capable on land their strength lies in the water as they use their wings as flippers to power their way through the water at tremendous speeds making hunting fish and other marine animals a breeze.
Their wings don't just help them in the water, they also give them the power of flight.
Scientists pondered over their arial abilities for a long time as technically due to the animals size, compared to their wings they shouldn't be able to fly at all. The secret was not found in the way they fly but what goes on inside. Like fire types 'dragon pokemon' can extract hydrogen from the air, however instead of igniting and expelling the hydrogen like fire types, they store it in large 'bladders' in their chest. These pockets are even bigger than their lungs and can store and pressurize a huge amount of gas very quickly. This decreases their body weight by 32% and allows them to fly. Technically they cannot provide self powered flight but glide using cliffs to take off and then riding air currents, similar to Charizard's.
The horn on their head still acts as a weapon when battling for a mate, but unlike Dragonair's exposed horn, the skin has healed over it similar again to Charizard's back facing horns.
The fins that were once perched upon its head have turned into long 'whisker' like tendrils. Though they have no useful function they are believed to aid in acquiring a mate. It is thought that they use them in some form of alluring dance, however only a few people have said to have seen this 'dance of the dragons'.
Though they are mammals they do not give birth to live young, and lay their eggs in sea caves deep in sandy pools. They leave them until they hatch. Dratini have unique songs which their parents will hear from miles away to return to feed them. When they are strong, many dratini from around that area will gather together and swim upstream to warmer waters inland until they are ready to evolve and start the cycle again.
They live mainly in the ocean or near ocean cliffs. Its said they are attracted by lighthouses beams as a few times Dragonite have been seen near them.
Like their prevo they have beautiful songs that can travel for miles, however they only sing when they are either ready to mate or completely content. Only a few captive dragons have sung, one of the most famous is the world famous dragon trainer Lance, who's Dragonite's songs have earnt him a small fortune.
Hope you like it

Nice work.

Not only are your pictures fantastic, but your descriptions are amazing! You cover many details that the Pokemon community don't even bother to explain, like the fact that this pokemon comes from a very serpentine pre-form. I also like the fact that you include real people from the pokemon movies and games to describe your creations, such as Elite 4 Champion Lance, or boy-genius Bill in your Porygon piece. I also like the fact that you explain why that Dragonite silhouette was seen near Bill's lighthouse. And of course the most pressing matter: How Dragonite is even capable of flight. You, sir, are a genius.

Absolutely beautiful description. You've certainly outdone yourself with this one. Dragonite would likely mimic for defense because they are peaceful, though they could easily hold their own.

I love how the Dragonites half-submerged while perched on a rock! Looks like Lance DOES have a secret job. No wonder he could afford those Poke-Hack Cereal in PKMN Silver/Gold! *cough two lvl 47 and 1 lvl 50 dragonite cough*
Epiiicc,Dragonite vs. Gyarados!

This is good! It looks much different from the original, but then again, dragonite isn't the most realistic pokemon. Sorry I haven't posted much. I haven't been checking DA that often.

supercalifreakinawesome. i think you've helped me make an important decision josh. you see ive been trying to create my own pkmn party for a while but the last two members have always been up in air. i have glaceon, typhlosion, lapras, and metagross but i need two more guys and i want one to be a dragon. well ive been debating on what dragon to use and it came down to salamance and dragonite. well your work has inspired me to choose dragonite....which still leaves another open spot but that will be filled in due time. anyway about your artwork. its incredible. it always made me wonder how dragonite could fly with such small wings. the picture itself is incredible. this is probably one of my favorites of yours so far josh. (funny they always seem to make dragonite look kinda dumb or disproportional in the games. im not thrilled with his current sprite in the D/P/P games.) anyway good job.

no prob....i just remembered that i have to train a new dragonite because the one i have now doesnt have very good SPATK. its no fun having a dragon with a weak flamethrower or a short circuit of a thunder attack or a cool breeze of an ice beam. right? in all honesty im not one of those people who goes "omg this pokemon doesnt have the right stats and nature i dont want it lets breed 20 more." i mean i try to balance out the defensive abilities and focus on the attack abilities that better suit the pokemon.

First of all, great picture! I especially like the part underwater, because of the pattern of the light underwater against its skin. It looks very realistic, and is a lovely touch to all three members of the line. The structure of the body also looks great, and is very realistic. I love those claws, and even the wings look good (they can be hard to pull off, as there's noting in real life with those). Also, nice effects of the melting snow falling on the dragonite.
It uses mimicry to imitate a charizard? If I were a gyarados, I'd probably be less afraid of the fire-type charizard, and be much more worried about facing the water-resisting dragonite. But then again, that's only following the game rules. Still, you'd think a charizard would be at a pretty bad disadvantage over the water. >_>
Clever explaination on its ability to fly despite being misproportionate.

Glad you like it. I just see it that gyarados are hunted occasionally by charizard, but it was the best explination i could think of lol

I agree with that guy who said you should draw a picture of a charizard catching a gyarados for its dinner. With an explaination as to how they manage to catch such large, dangerous sea beasts.
Because I sure can't picture it on my own. In the games, we're talking a major type weakness here, and in real life, we've got this thing that needs momentum to fly trying to take down something which would at least be close to its size (gyarados is meant to be waaay bigger than charizard, but I understand you're no big fan of the pokemon's given sizes. Still, I'd imagine gyarados would be no runt in your world). And we're talking a creature which relies on keeping a flame alight trying to hunt from the ocean.

thats true, they would only do it in desperation but some animals have been driven to extremes in the search of food
