Description
The Knowingby jsenn (Joy Senn)
not quite
not quite the same
not quite the same as before
before the papered golden ring
before the child from swaddling grew
before the hand of unheard aches
touched us here and here and here
we never knew
I swear to you, we never knew
(we live forever. don't we? nope.)
(does it get better? yup.)
falling leaves . spring renews . summer's sweat
trickles slowly
between the
breasts
oh,
I do digress
now is more
more than before
now we know the knowing
and the power in the word
knowing some mountains won't be climbed
knowing some oceans won't be crossed
knowing the awful wait does end
that patience is not the heavy load
knowing even this
...the rose's scent before the sniff
and this...oh, this, of greater import now
knowing the slightest grin
the unseen move
the imperceptible glint of eye
the lingering
the elegant, the elegant
anticipation
there you have it, boiled down
hopes and dreams, love and life
contained by the beginning
smooth assurance, abiding time
now, my love...begins the ending
(so...we don't live forever. nope.)
(life is the same, only better? yup.)
now we know
life is the same
bless the knowing
blest be the name

I love this. LOVE this. This is such an amazing poem. "patience is not the heavy load" is probably my favorite line. I can't believe I haven't found you sooner.

Wow. It's absolutely amazing. You don't have to be someone special to understand it. My favorite stanza is:
"knowing some mountains won't be climbed
knowing some oceans won't be crossed
knowing the awful wait does end
that patience is not the heavy load"
And, I just want to throw this out there, but... I find that the difference between the comments from almost ten years ago and from these day is astounding. Look at them!

This is lovely. I really liked how you started the poem, it kept me reading to the end. Your poem kind of reminds me of my grandma and grandpa and the questions and doubts they might've had through their lives

I believe ~Engineseer said it best. This is a powerful piece. I've read this twice today now, and have gotten two very different emotions out of it each time. That, my friend, is the mark of a truly great piece.

And why do you think that is so?

Engineseer In reply to Kasterkk [2010-07-10 06:15:07 +0000 UTC]
Because it's the kind of poem that you can read all sorts of things into, or failing that it's vague and flowery enough that you could have a nice long argument about what the poet is trying to say.
When I said this poem could torment english lit students I meant it as a compliment, a snarky compliment but a compliment none the less.

hopes and dreams ... you paint them all so well, arrange them in shadowboxes, install them in museums and yet they live and breathe and move about the universe.
sigh ... i want you to create a new world when this one is over.

oh.
your words are very comforting, Joy. i know, i've read this wonderful poem more than ten times already, but i'm surprised that your words carress me differently tonight. suddenly your poem had a different, but very relevant meaning. tonight, they say "life is okay. you'll be alright."
and i love them. each word, every rhyme, the wisdom wrapped by the lines.

Still being at the begining of my journey. This poem is like an inscription found in a beautiful book, bound in leather, with a weight that seems to affirm existence all by itself. The thoughts expressed in ink having meaning to any person... in any civilization... in any time.

Well, if ever a wordsmith deserved the accolade of "Daily Deviation", it could be none other than the "Joyous" Joy Senn, (not the other one). You know who I mean, Joy. These words are extraordinary in their flow and beauty, and could only have come from the pen of everyone's favorite lady on the net, The Deviously Joyous Joy Senn.
I rest my case your Honour.

Just happened to be listening to Miles Davis', "It Never Entered My Mind". The masterful flow of your piece went perfectly with the slow pace of Mr. Miles Davis. I really like your work, ever do anything professionally?

Oh Joy, what a wonderful journey you are on. To be so human and childlike, in awe of the creation we are allowed to play with, while growing into the wisdom of understanding.
Through your words you share your soul with all of us - an incomparable gift. You will live forever, in fact, I think you already have
Thanks...
