And after their mother was banished life for Zuko most have gotten a lot worse, seeing as their mother could no longer be there to put Azula in her place. And Ozai surely didn't care about what went on between those two.

Yeah. She knew how to make poison which would make him pass out in his sleep. Ozai didn't trust her to continue to live there in fear that she one day would do it to him too.

Well that is correct, she did poison him only to save Zuko. Ozai didn't know how to kill him and make it look like a natural death.
