Description This piece reflects, in an abstract way, how I feel about religion in general these days. Most people, only think of God as some kind of cosmic vending machine or ATM. It's a Middle-Upper Class syndrome where people attribute financial or material acquisition as "blessings" from God. It's really amusing when I hear someone posting updates on their FB, thanking God for the new iPhone, their straight As, and what not. To the average faithful, God is reduced to some kind of a genie in a bottle who grants the wishes of worthy people.  This is pretty much the same in any religion for as long as it believes in some kind of deity/deities.

Anyway, this is not a bash on religion. But it's something to think about.

(PS: Some folks have been asking why I included Daoism there. Well, do read my comments on their queries and you'll find out why)

Lol that's fascinating. Asian religions are so much funier than occidental or midle east ones. Here in europe the majority of religion are basically "dont do this or you'll burn in hell, don't do that or you'll burn in hell too, don't even think about this or you'll burn in hell, don't forget to pray or you'll burn in hell......" from what you say asian religions are more like "give satan a space cake and he'll trip balls so he won't take you to hell this year"

haha well, i think Asian religions are worse... according to Daoism (even Buddhists believe this), we all pass through Hell in the afterlife. no one is exempt from it no matter what. if you lived a life of goodness, your time in Hell may be shortened, but you will still go there and endure some kind of torture for even little things. later additions to Daoist beliefs, says that there's little you can do to achieve salvation in life. you will reincarnate over and over again, until all your sins have been atoned for, and that doesn't count future sins that you may commit in another life... and if you are a bad person, you may even incarnate as an animal next time. it's far more depressing i'd say.

kinda explains as to why lots of Asians are converting to Abrahamic religion in masses these days. this was part of my studies a few years a back. it's amazing how largely different Daoism and Buddhism is sold to the Western world than what is really going on here in its places of origin.

Hum seen like this i guess you're right.... As far as i'm concern religions are tales. On the other hand philosophy related text like tao te ching may be usefull to some people like me. Reading this book kind of helped me with my hanger problems.
But yeah i think we are just pieces of meat animated by complex but not magical bio computer and once you are dead you just return as a pile of inanimated pile of biomass like a computer cease to be a computer and turn into scrap metal once you break it with a hammer. It's kind of sad but i guess lao tzu would say something like "this is how things goes and you can't do shit about it. Just don't worry about that and live a happy life." in a more poetic way of course... i'm not good with words .

you're right. i think we shouldn't think too much about what we choose to believe or not believe. let's just enjoy life and be good people to ourselves and to others. i think it's more than enough. whether or not there's really an afterlife, i think we ought not to worry about it. but i choose to believe that if there really is one, it's going to be a very beautiful thing.

I don't mean to go off topic here but I just want to say your English is very good compared to some French on here. I have so little idea what they're talking about I can't even respond to their comments. I hope their French is better.

Please pardon the interruption and continue your discussion.

I'm french
But yeah people in my country tend to be terrible with foreign language. I don't know why. Every other country in europe tend to speak english better than us. Nords countries like sweeden even speak it like it's their mother's tong.
I guess it's because of our education system who prefer to teach in elementary school how municipalities handle their budgets instead of teaching the basics of spanish/english (I'm not even kidding).

Sounds similar to something we're trying here called common core. It's ironic I'm hearing from a French person how socialism isn't working out so well for them. I empathize because the idiots running our government are trying to take us the way you all have gone.

Well fun fact here it's called "socle commun" which basically trenslate into common core.
Socialisme isn't a bad thing in itself. Well at least it's the less worst we have in our country. Some country like sweeden are socialist and it work great for them.
It's either that or the republican party, a bunch of corupted/racist/homophobic lawyers and friends of the most powerfull ceo of the country.

I can't speak about your free market party. It's nice to find a society where people are rewarded for their work. It seems in the case of most socialist countries equal pay doesn't equal the amount of work done. For instance: I work with some people who don't care about the work they do at all but they get paid $0.50 less then me. I work the whole time I'm on the work site but there are so many MILLIONS of people on the dole in my country it's hard for the corporation to find anyone to work at all.

I think that there should be a middle ground between the parties where the people aren't starving but they are forced to work if they're able bodied and not mentally disabled. You might find that the people in your republican party are hated by the GBLT's too if you had to spend a while in their places. If you look at the other races around my country many of them are into racial purity too so there are two sides to that label also. Remember all the greedy and power hungry ways we like to define corporate CEO's. All that avarice and exceptionalism can be used against the more corrupt companies in a free market. Rich people don't like getting robbed any more then poor. Corruption does exist in corporate society but in my country for instance many people of races who like to think of themselves as discriminated against take advantage of too many welfare loopholes and actually have an unfair advantage against those of us who don't take handouts. So sometimes in that instance the supposedly discriminated race is using socialism to harm others. I don't see my political parties as bad or good. There are enough bad people for me to worry about without trying to divide my country against itself with any political group.

This is brilliant. Great visualization of what is happening nowadays and how people missuse religion for wrong purposes. Amazing concept and wonderful realisation. Great job

Yeah that's kinda how i feel religion is now...

I thank God for letting me wake up in the morning still alive and being able to see my family and friends, and letting me bring happiness to others... Things that matter last forever, thing you can buy won't mater when you die

I have my own philosophy of sorts for religion

God gives you what you need, when you truly need it

not what you want, and  when you want it ...Like vending machine as you said

also this is a stunning species of work!

Julian-Faylona In reply to HaelHallo [2015-08-27 21:36:37 +0000 UTC]

thank you!

that is true. i mean, why would the transcendent-almighty being that is God, would be so petty as to act like Santa Claus to everyone. what people need to realize is that we all need to be taking action by helping one another, not using God as an excuse not to do anything. it's funny when some people don't feel like helping another, they'll just say, "i'll keep you in my prayers"... lol

HaelHallo In reply to Julian-Faylona [2015-08-27 21:57:19 +0000 UTC]

Your most welcome!

I feel maybe some treat God like Santa clause is maybe because they feel like they deserve it? Of course not all people are like that, but I have meet a few that think like that. they say "I'm such a good person, i don't do anything wrong, why dose God hate me, why won't he let me have this and that."

I'm just like, You have to do that your self, God is not some magical puppeteer, pulling the strings on your life so that you can do and have all this stuff.  He gave us free will, to do what ever we want, not that he won't help us when we need it, but we do to something, take action, like you said.

also what you said don't feel like helping other, and say "i'll keep you in my prayers", it's a nice gesture, something nice to say, but what if that person needs someone to talk to, or just someone to hug?
You gonna go home and pray and ask God to make their life better, when they could have done it, I believe he give us opportunities to do something , we just are to lazy to take them, or just don't care.

My perspiration on God is some what comical, and is like parent that wants the best for you, trys to help at times, and you still just sitting....Doing nothing, he just looking down at the world just like *face palm*"I can't do everything for you, you have to do it, be a big kid now."

some angel just just says, "I told you, you should have kept  the dinosaurs."

just how I see it  lol

My favorite is when people thank god for curing their cancer/illness/making them survive a tragedy. You'd think he'd have just not put you in that situation in the first place. Also, this work is absolutely stunning.

i totally agree with that. while on the next ward another person is suffering the same thing and gets nothing despite their prayers.

Sometimes I do thank God for the few small things I own, my family/friends, my health, or my ability to buy healthy food for myself. I don't fell guilty for that but try not to focus on possessions too often.

I usually pray for things like my friends and those who I consider decent acquaintances to be cured of their life threatening illnesses, or I pray for healing for the suffering and homes for the homeless if I can't think of anyone specific. We generally believe in my religion that God will choose who to bless with health and such based on their inner goodness and whether they're trying to do His will. His will which generally has to do with people helping each other out and not coveting fleeting earthly things.

I just noticed non-members can't see these annoying taglines, weird.
