The foil is because when you use model magic, it wont dry completely on the inside. the foil actually makes it sturdier too.

This is very helpful, might I ask what would be better to use as a base or do you have to use aluminum foil?

honestly I recommend not using a base at all. But if you're making large horns like Travros/Rufioh/etc then I would say styrofoam or somefin similar.
I would also like to recommend this method of making horns. I've discovered it recently and am quite pleased with how they look. The tutorial shown is a bit crude though. I'm considering creating a more organized version of it...so it's easier for others to read. and give credit where needed.

o_o oh my god im jelly.
how did you get them to not crack?!
π: 0 β©: 1
k2w2 In reply to CaliforniaSigma [2012-10-25 19:47:21 +0000 UTC]
I learned that if you used a base underneath, they're more likely to crack. >_<; Also, it's more difficult with larger horns. For example, my Karkat horns were so incredibly easy but my Sivern (fantroll) horns cracked a little. Luckily for me the cracks weren't that big and I could sand them out with sandpaper...
I apologize if this did not help. u_u

Good luck. ouo you're going to need at least a wire base for that. And some serious glue. (Sorry for the late reply.)

I'm planning on making Aradia horns and using the tinfoil technique, but I was wondering how heavy they are once they're on your head. My karkat horns are tiny, but they are pretty heavy being made out of clay.

k2w2 In reply to Failure-At-Failing [2012-07-09 17:40:08 +0000 UTC]
Well there's a difference between the Model Magic I've used and regular clay. The Model Magic is surprisingly light so *especially* for the larger troll horns, I recommend it over regular heavy clay. I believe you can get it online but if not, you can find it at almost any craft store in the US. c:
