The animation was done TVPaint. I actually created the robot’s “voice” myself, using a digital synthesizer.

TVPaint is pretty good for animation, it's a dedicated animation program after all. Animating the coloring was fairly painless too, though I haven't tried it with anything other than simple flat colors yet.
