Description
Proper titles for my paintings are often elusive, so I'll just name it after what inspired it, for now. This was mostly just an experiment with various techniques. I had been out in the garden planting cabbages... I thought the texture and patterns of the cabbages were interesting, and wanted to use them in a painting. Also, I use water soluble oil paints, so I wanted to see what effects I could create by lifting paint off the canvas, rather than simply adding to it. Using the oil paints almost like watercolours. I drew a figure (based loosely on myself) on the canvas and just started adding paint with no real plan in mind.
It's been through various, very different looking, stages. Stages where I hated it and stages where I loved it. I'm happy with the end result, though there are some niggling problems I could have avoided had I not given in to frustration and rushed it. I'll probably go back and fix them when the current layer has dried.
Oil paints, 12x16 inches.

Stunning work, Katrina, the fact you did this with no real plan in mind really appeals to me...I think some of the best paintings evolve this way

I love the textures, and the way the eyes seem like the most solid part.

It's incredible, simply fantastic! I like the tan color, she is beautiful, love the face and tendrils of hair. I like fairies. A cabbage fairy, what a fantastic idea. I like cabbage, it's good for you.

Very impressive. The photo-like clarity of the face mixes well with the fantastic element you created with the beautiful curving designs and teh faery wings. Simply amazing.

Etherreal. I wish my garden inspired me in the same way (just what would a painting based on asparagus look like anyway ). How did you learn the technique?

I just experimented with applying the paint in different ways. if something wasn't working out I took the paint off and started again. I didn't really have a plan as to what I wanted the painting to look like, so I was free to play around and see what worked for me.
Asparagus, eh? Interesting...

Yep. Asparagus. And the spring onions are just about ready, then it'll be the strawberries and blueberries. None of which has ever inspired my art. lol
I rem reading a quote by Renoir - who I think used to apply paint then scrape it - apply it, then scape it. Someone asked how he knew when he was done painting one of his woman. He replied that he knew she was done when he wanted to pinch the flesh on her cheeks. (I always wondered which cheeks he meant)

I have some blueberries and onions growing, too. Who knows, maybe they'll inspire something in me... Though I'm thinking more in the kitchen, than in the studio.

If you cook as good as you paint that will be something!

I'm not really all that great at cooking. I'm not bad or anything, but people are hardly falling over themselves to come and test my experiments.

Thank you, Katerina.
I use my digital camera. I used to scan my paintings in parts, but it took too long to stitch them together, and my scanner usually made my paintings look weird (very grainy). So I went back to using my camera.

It seems as if she's emerging from, or disappearing into, a mist. It's a really interesting, somewhat surreal effect. I also love the minimal color palette.
I've always wanted to try water-soluble oil paints, so this is an inspiration!

That is the effect I was after. Once I started applying paint, I liked the misty effect that was starting to emerge, and wanted to keep a sense of things merging into each other. I actually think I had a better feel of that at an earlier stage, but lost it a little. I'm still happy with what I learned from it, though, and I'm glad it could be an inspiration to you.
