ANNOUNCEMENT (5/24/17): Alright, so at this point this tutorial is pretty much entirely outdated (being made in 2006 and all). The program isn't even called Flash anymore, lol. I'm leaving this up on the off chance that it is still useful to someone with a really ancient version of Flash, but if you're looking to learn the program you should probably look elsewhere. I'm grateful for all the faves and comments this got over the years, and glad that it was helpful for people.
IMPORTANT: Make sure you are using ActionScript 2.0 and not 3.0, or you may have some issues with the code working. This is because they changed a bunch of stuff for 3.0 and it is evil. DAMN YOU ACTIONSCRIPT 3.0! DAMN YOU TO HELL!!!! D<
8/31/08 - Finally, finally, I updated this. I took out all the stuff that doesn't work and added a few new things as well, such as preloaders and behaviors. Thank you for all the faves! I hope this tutorial continues to help people to learn the basics of Flash!

when your making a game how do you make like text boxes for players to write cheat codes in or type their name at the beginning of the game? If you have it in this tutorial I might not have realized it cuz I just clicked through to find what I was looking for.

ActionScript 2.0 is the built in programming language for Flash (which is sadly not free, but you can probably download a demo). When starting a new file in Flash, you can choose between using ActionScript 2.0 or 3.0.

Oh, you'd be surprised, I actually got flash for FREE! I don't know how, but it just happened while I was searching and accidentally clicked "download", and after I realized it, I was so relieved. On top of that, When I got this laptop, I found out that photoshop was already installed! Talk about lucky. Weirdness...I just went to look at it to see what you meant, and the background color has apparently changed...spontaneously. I have no idea why, I guess maybe dA messed up the file somehow? The background is normally a dark grey. Apologies for that, I'll try to re-upload the file as soon as I can.

For some reason the actionscript coding in your tutorial won't work in my flash. I set it to actionscript 2.0 and typed it in as you put in the tutorial and it's not working it keeps saying:

I'm new to flash and no nothing of action script, but I'm guessing by the word Error this isn't supposed to happen (sorry for sarcasm). Can you help me? if it helps, I'm using Macromedia Flash Pro 8.

Haha, yeah, that's definitely NOT supposed to happen...first of all, what are you trying to do? I'm guessing you're trying to make a preloader based on that error message. Can you copy paste the actionscript you typed for me? I'll see if I can figure it out from there.

Hi, sorry for the delay in my response. My laptop that has Flash on it is currently not working, so I haven't been able to work on answering your question. I'll hopefully be able to get it working in the next few days. If you haven't already, I recommend looking for some preloader specific tutorials (I know there's at least one really good one here on dA). They can probably teach you a lot of different options for preloaders.

this is a really awesome flash tutorial.Now thanks to your tutorial I can make buttons(I'm a newbie to flash)I would recommend this tutorial as the easiest one that I can understand.
