Description
ANNOUNCEMENT (5/24/17): Alright, so at this point this tutorial is pretty much entirely outdated (being made in 2006 and all). The program isn't even called Flash anymore, lol. I'm leaving this up on the off chance that it is still useful to someone with a really ancient version of Flash, but if you're looking to learn the program you should probably look elsewhere. I'm grateful for all the faves and comments this got over the years, and glad that it was helpful for people.IMPORTANT: Make sure you are using ActionScript 2.0 and not 3.0, or you may have some issues with the code working. This is because they changed a bunch of stuff for 3.0 and it is evil. DAMN YOU ACTIONSCRIPT 3.0! DAMN YOU TO HELL!!!! D<
8/31/08 - Finally, finally, I updated this. I took out all the stuff that doesn't work and added a few new things as well, such as preloaders and behaviors. Thank you for all the faves! I hope this tutorial continues to help people to learn the basics of Flash!

it keeps saying when i try to make a button to go to another frame: "current selection cannot have actions aplied to it." i am using flash 8...

Kaetana In reply to AoiTori-chan [2009-07-15 22:42:07 +0000 UTC]
That message usually means that whatever you are trying to put actions in isn't a symbol. Did you already select whatever you want to be the button, hit F8, and then make it a Button?

Hmm, I tried making a button and I can't add an action to "hit".. it says "Current Selection cannot have actions applied to it." Is it because I'm using a trail of flash 8? You can only make actions work on buttons in full version? I tried looking all over the websites, but it doesnt say trail is limited.. ._.
By the way, amazing tut! Taught me a lot. ^-^

Kaetana In reply to x-ManiacalMoni-x [2009-06-28 23:37:11 +0000 UTC]
You can only apply actions to symbols. So even though you're within a symbol (the button) the actual thing you're trying to apply an action to (the hit frame within the button) isn't a symbol. If you convert that to a symbol too it should work for you. ^_^
Glad the tutorial helped you! Good luck with your Flash!

You just draw a new picture for the next frame (it has to be a keyframe). Think of it like you're making a flipbook, for each page (keyframe) you draw a new image, and when you play them all in a row it creates the illusion of motion. Does that make sense? ^_^

lol I had gotten it but thankies so much anyway.
Now I'm having a lot of trouble with making a replay button.
It's actually in my journal.
T_T I can't get it right now matter what I do.
Either the code is wrong or I'm doing something wrong.
I know how to make it where the replay button is throughout the whole video but I don't want that.
I want it where the replay button pops up right after the video is over.

Okay. I made a button in a dress up that leads to a another dress up. That bit works. I'm trying to make a back button to go back to the original game, but the
on(press){gotoAndPlay(#)}
code isn't working. I think it may be because when i type in
on(press){gotoAndPlay(1)}
because the dress up is on scene one it goes to the first scene in the button's separate little timeline.
Can you help?

I don't have any plans to write another tutorial at this time, but you can probably apply a lot of the stuff in this tutorial to making a dating sim. If you give me an idea of how you want your sim to work I can give you advice and try to answer any questions you might have.

how do you do it where the button goes to another page or like in a dress up game, it goes to another cloest space to show more clothes
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Kaetana In reply to Rachadow [2009-05-03 05:21:32 +0000 UTC]
Well if you want it to go another frame with that content in it, you'd put
on (press){
gotoAndPlay(frame)
}
where 'frame' is whatever frame the other closet space is in.
Is that what you're asking, or something else?

I'm not sure what you mean? Do you mean what dimensions should you make the Flash game so that it fits on screen when someone is viewing it? That's going to vary depending on what resolution their monitor is.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Rachadow In reply to Kaetana [2009-10-19 17:17:01 +0000 UTC]
that can be hard, i am planning to make one for my friends bday as a present but i am stuck on the dimensions to make the game :/
what would you say is the normal size for it?
ps: i cannot look at your past messages so please send the info on changing the frames to another layer if you can please, sorry to bother you with this
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Kaetana In reply to Rachadow [2009-10-23 08:26:07 +0000 UTC]
I'd go with whatever the standard size is when you create a new Flash document, unless you need it to be larger for some reason.
I'm not sure what you mean in the PS...if you need to move some frames to another layer, just select them all, right click, copy frames, select the layer you want them to be on, right click, paste frames.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Rachadow In reply to Kaetana [2009-10-23 13:14:22 +0000 UTC]
well i changed the size due to other documents so unsure of the size, i tried to upload a dress up game but the size i used was default one when u download flash first time, but that has changed and also the head was missing off the page cause the size
in the PS i meant resend the code for the dress up game i need for when i click a button and it leads to another layer of clothes without leaing the current layer on

Haha, that's probably because I made this when I was a noob. I made it more than three years ago, and though I've considered going back and changing some cosmetic stuff, its not really at the top of my list of things to do.
(It also uses Papyrus as a font, which my typography class has taught me is apparently the root of all evil.)
Thanks for commenting.
