Description
ANNOUNCEMENT (5/24/17): Alright, so at this point this tutorial is pretty much entirely outdated (being made in 2006 and all). The program isn't even called Flash anymore, lol. I'm leaving this up on the off chance that it is still useful to someone with a really ancient version of Flash, but if you're looking to learn the program you should probably look elsewhere. I'm grateful for all the faves and comments this got over the years, and glad that it was helpful for people.IMPORTANT: Make sure you are using ActionScript 2.0 and not 3.0, or you may have some issues with the code working. This is because they changed a bunch of stuff for 3.0 and it is evil. DAMN YOU ACTIONSCRIPT 3.0! DAMN YOU TO HELL!!!! D<
8/31/08 - Finally, finally, I updated this. I took out all the stuff that doesn't work and added a few new things as well, such as preloaders and behaviors. Thank you for all the faves! I hope this tutorial continues to help people to learn the basics of Flash!

for your own custom cursor, how come when i use it in a dress up game/ grabbing and drop game, when i click on a clothing item it drops the cursor and becomes the old hand one?

Some of the stuff in there is outdated, which is probably why you're running across these problems (see the edit I just added in the Artist's Comments). 👍: 0 ⏩: 1
For the sound:
Here's how you really should do it. Create a new layer in the timeline and name it 'Sound' or something like that. Make sure it's selected. Now drag the sound file from the library on to the stage (you don't have to drop it on anything particular, like I said before) and let go. You'll see part of the sound file appear in the timeline for that layer. Add frames to the Sound layer until you find the end of the sound file.
Now, click the Sound layer. In the Properties Inspecter (hit Ctrl + F3 to open it if it's not open) you should see an area where it says Sound:
The first box after Sync is most likely set to 'Event'. Change that to 'Start'. This will make it so that your sound starts at the beginning. This also keeps it from looping over itself. The next box can either be set to 'Loop' or 'Repeat'. If you want it to keep playing infinitely, set it to Loop. Otherwise, select Repeat and enter the number of times you want it to repeat in the box next to it. Keep in mind: if you don't have the stop(); ActionScript in the last frame in some layer it will keep looping.
In terms of the cursor, I would guess it has something to do with the coding used. I'll look into a way of coding it so that it won't do that.
I hope that helps, let me know if you have any questions.

Your 'motion' tutorial didn't work for me... is there any problems in the coding?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Kaetana In reply to rafigirl [2007-01-01 21:25:05 +0000 UTC]
Hmm...well part of it might depend on what version of Flash you're using.
Some of the stuff in this tutorial is outdated now, as I've learned better ways to do some of it, so I'll look at giving better instruction on movement next time I make one. Sorry it doesn't work though. D:
