Just realized I never replied.. Clean edges on the sticks. Uhm I made the base brown color and used the pen tool function in photoshop. Set my paths for the sticks, then used the stroke function with the pen. It sets a clean line. Since it was layered, I can go in, dodge/burn, add color, make spots, etc.. without touching the rest of the picture. All the little joints were made simply with the dodge/burn tool, and then the smudge tool to give it those little wide and narrow areas.
