Alternate ModesHere are Basic types of alternate modes that your character transforms into, Neutrals and other types of transformers factions can go either way.
Automobiles, or military vehicles,- any land-based vehicles are typically common forms for Autobots, though often times, jets or boats are notable exceptions, and often neutrals possessed alt. modes too.
Military aircrafts, or Tanks - Decepticons usually have aircraft modes, and considered common to them, automobiles are often rare.
Any Animal, Insects or even Dragons, - These are uncommon forms for transformers, meaning they may be Maximals or Predacons (Beast Wars), or neutral of both factions, even.
None/Other - Often Neutral, in cases your OC never left cybertron, or still a protoform that hasn't scanned an alt. mode yet, or not considered given them an alt. mode at all.
Colors schemesThe colors of your OC can tie to their alt. modes, Allegiance (faction), function, or their personality, or making them have a distinct color if possible, Try to pick a primary color and a secondary colors, 3 to 7 different colors on a single character. Often so, making your oc with one color, seems dull and boring, depends on your point of view, I guess, Too many colors looks awful, and not make it all rainbow, that's what we call a "Mary-sue" whatever that is.

The colors of your OC's optics (eyes) are also tied to their faction or personality, Autobots are commonly cool-colored blue and Decepticons have warm-colored red or even yellow. Neutrals could also have yellow optics, green, and sometimes Transformers could have light purple and orange.

Transformers Aligned continuity- The designs of the cartoon, Transformers: Prime is the easiest, most popular, and the most basic choice of designing your OC, Many Transformers fans recommend using these designs, often you can your oc may fit in 2015 Robots in Disguise cartoon, or the Rescue Bots cartoon, or the High Moon video games that considered sharing the continuity.
Transformers Generation 1 continuity (cartoon or comics)- The longest-running Transformers universe, Its the core of all fictional Transformers universes and the bases of almost all Transformers characters, IDW G1 comic continuity may be considered also a popular choice.
Transformers Animated cartoon continuity  - not often common universe people used to make ocs, but i'm sure your a fan of the cartoon.
Transformers live actions films, - Bayverse (The first five films in the series were directed by Michael Bay) or Travis Knight's Bumblebee movie universe.
Transformers: Cyberverse 2018 cartoon -  not often common universe people used to make ocs, but i'm sure your a fan of the cartoon.
Remember, designing a Transformers OC is rather complicated at first, considering your not a fan of drawing mechas, What I recommend is picking Transformers: Prime because the artwork of its characters are simple, and yet easy designs, not too complicated at first and that artists who outgrown the cartoon series had more experience. It's is rather a popular choice. So remember to practice and just draw simple concept sketches, (probably from a piece of paper) of your character, until you have enough experience or skills, and always trying improve more and more your artwork and design.
