Description #12: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990)

Yeah I know the fact that this entry is the original theatrical TMNT movie surprises no one who knows me.  I won't say anything against you if you like the new 2014 film, that's your right and all, but I still sincerely hope that in the greater scheme of entertainment history this is the Ninja Turtles that gets looked back upon most as the defining idea of what the Turtles were always meant to be on the big screen.  It's kind of amazing how great this movie is considering how small a budget it had, to this day it remains one of the most successful and beloved independent small budget movies ever.  This is the movie that made me love Raph the most of the brothers, and will always be my ideal Shredder (with a big helping of love to the late James Avery).

Sounds like we share a similar sentiment in regard to the new film (though I didn't mind the more heroic Vernon).

Yeah, Vernon didn't really bother be THAT much because you can't really improve much on a wormy character than to try and give him a few redeeming qualities

This movie is fantastic! It's a bit of a shame the two sequels aren't as good, but eh. And even though it had a small budget it really defined a lot when it came to Turtle culture! I mean, the 2007 animated movie may not be as good (I still love it, though), and the newest 2014 Turtles is a big budget film with lots (really, any surprise with a Bay film?) of flashy effects and explosions, THIS movie...this movie remains as one of my favorites

I'm really missing out. I've only ever watched a small portion of the movie, and it's not the most clear memory either.

Gotta Love Shredder!!!!!

No doubt, no doubt.  If you ever get around to the whole thing I hope you get a kick out of it, there's such a time capsule quality to it but it's still really neat to this day to see stunt guys in real turtle suits pulling off such amazing moves when they were practically blind in the turtle helmets.  I'm not saying CGI is always bad but there's just something special about knowing those guys put their hardest effort into it.

*Cracks knuckles* Let's see, where to begin

Ok, I like to think I'm a lot more fair than other old school fanboys with all of my fandoms, but I only got as much enjoyment out of 2014 movie as I did because I went in with SUCH LOW expectations that it actually could only go up from there.  To be fair there are some positives, but I'll list those second so to end on a better note.  The film suffers mainly from the swerve involving Shredder and changing the fact that William Fichtner was supposed to play him, only to recast him halfway through filming as the secondary bad guy.  Now I know that sounds weird because you'd think I'd prefer a more traditional Shredder, but the final film really feels like they had to overhaul it at the last minute because of that change, and it ended up making Oroku Saki far less of a real character than he should have been.
April O'Neil is just......siiiiiiigh, that's the hardest for me, because I absolutely adore April, have since I was a kid, so to turn her into the "smoking hot" flavor of the time who ALMOST reaches the character I love is a bummer for me.  To be honest it's probably Megan Fox at her relative best, but standing against almost all the Aprils before her it's still a let down.  Vernon is VINO (Vernon In Name Only), and there's really not much to add there.  I HATE HATE HATE that they made Michelangelo sexual toward April, I know they were going for a "homie" spin on him but it just pissed me off to no end.  The film is unbalanced and not the first installment a reboot should have been, but it does leave the door open for a much better sequel which I am hopeful for, especially given the news of Bebop, Rocksteady, Casey Jones and possibly Krang joining the cast.
For the positives, the Turtles were basically the boys I love, and I'd be lying if I didn't say Raph's cheesy crying speech at the end didn't get me a little.  The action was solid, I freaking love Fichtner and even though the flying knives were stupid as crap, Shredder did look pretty BA (reminded me of a sort of updated Super Shredder from TMNT 2).  It was nice to see Karai on the big screen, even if she was underused.  The elevator scene was brilliant.  So there were definitely positives, I just want them to learn from their mistakes and go way better on installment 2.

Phew, that was long

Now for the Nick show.  I like it, I really do.  I didn't EXPECT to, because the designs are so weird looking in the semi cheap CGI they're using, but the more I watched it the more I really, really grew to like it, it's a great overall blend of several TMNT incarnations that really does try to reach across the aisle and please the fanbases, both older and newer.  I absolutely LOVE Sean Astin's Raphael, possibly my favorite incarnation ever next to the original film.  I don't even mind the Donatello crush on April, it's actually pretty funny and played well.  The use of 80s cartoon and comic book material is really satisfying.  There's dumb juvenile humor (the butt canons on the ape-bots always annoy me) but on the whole I really like the direction the show took, especially giving Splinter the new dimension of being both an adoptive and biological father to characters in the show.  I always look forward to a new dvd set when it gets released (don't have and broadcast tv in the house).

Congrats, I think that's the longest reply I've ever made XD

I had recently seen the movie when I first heard that bay was going to make the turtles aliens  (I seriously wanted to kick him in the dick for that) . April here to me anyway really didn't have that much of an impact on me. Karai was just thrown in the movie because she exist. I wasn't really a big fan of Shredders design here it kinda felt like he broke into Tony Starrk's closet. Splinter was OK but he looked a little to much like Wile. E Coyote if his nose ran out of botocks. For the Turtles themselves I kinda split about there designs.

Leo's samurai style outfit looks awesome! Raph and Mikey's outfits fit there personalitys to a tee. Donnie on the other hand kinda fell short. Don't get me wrong I get it he's the brains of the team. But with all the tech on him and those stupid glasses  (god those glasses make me cringe) seems kinda over kill. What I don't like about the designs is the fact that they are huge and their faces look like they ran into a wall. Other than that the movie was ok.

Now for the G3 TMNT

I  love love LOVE!!! this incarnation of the TMNT. The Turtles designs are awesome Leo has the more even balance body type of his bros. Donnie (my personal favorite turtle). Has a tall gangly look to him with the gap in his teeth  (I seriously though it was cute) . And the fact that he is voiced by Rob Paulson just makes me love him even more. Raph has a short yet surly look to him with a small Crack in his shell. And the poster boy himself Mikey has a youthful look to him.

Splinter is cool to but he kinda looks like a Jackle rather than a rat. As for April, Karai, and Casey at first I was kinda pissed that they aged them down but there looks were kinda growing on me. Shredder is badass while I like Kevin Michael Richardson I always liked James Avery better  (I'll be honest he sacred the shit outta me as Uncle Phil from the Fresh Prince). Razar is sick he looks like a undead werewolf. Tiger Claw is badass it's like if someone murged Boba Fett with Shere Khan! As for Bebop and Rockstedy while I like Rockstedy what the hell happen to Bebop? Seriously some one give that guy a sandwich! Other than that the show is awesome!

I see I'm not alone in thinking that there could've been a different April. I'll be honest, I haven't seen much of the first animated series so Fenwick was...relatively ok. I was pretty angry that Casey wasn't in it, but when I heard that the sequel was supposed to have him, I felt better. I also didn't like that Mikey was too into April. If they toned it down it would've been better and more in-character. But besides that, the Turtle's personalities are spot on! I grew up with the 2K3 Turtles series, so I was happy with their personalities.

And yet despite all the gripes I have with the Turtles movies, ya gotta love 'em all. I mean, even the third Turtles movie I love, and we both know just how bad it is. It's like the Godzilla's Revenge of Turtles movies

That's usually where I fall as well, trying to take the best out of the bad (I can't really hate any turtles film...at least, not yet, haven't had one truly piss me off THAT badly yet ).  Also yes, mega shout out to the 2003 series, it revitalized my TMNT fandom like the Heisei Godzilla films did when they were finally brought over in 1998.  It's a strangely overlooked chapter in the TMNT pantheon I think largely because, unlike the 80s show and the current show, it's not all available to purchase, for some reason they never bothered to make it fully available on dvd, but thankfully last time I checked Youtube still has the whole series available to watch at the very least, and I'm sure other resources do, too.

I remember getting reinvigorated in the Turtles fandom back in my freshman year of high school, finding every single complete episode of the 2k3 series, and totally binging. My dad had to wake up, come out to the computer room, and remind me that it was 2 am and that I needed to get to bed. 2 am? Sure didn't feel like it.

Oh man, did that series have some dark episodes. We all know the infamous Same as it Never Was. Poor Donnie...while Mikey got to go to the superhero alternate Dimention, and Raph got to participate in an awesome space race, Donnie gets sent to a post-apocalyptic future Dimention and watches as all his brothers are killed. We're showing kids this? It's one of my favorite episodes, though.

The one episode that was for sure far too dark for any kid was the Darkness Within. I watched that episode once and I'm still scarred. Evil tentacle-arm Leo scares me the most. Poor Mikey...Raphael Shredder was a nice shoutout to the comics, though
