Sometimes the fictional heroes we love can have as much influence on our lives as real people. I grew up loving Adventures in Odyssey, a radio program for families that taught kids moral and life lessons. The central fatherly character was John Avery Whittaker, voiced by the late Hal Smith (Otis on The Andy Griffith Show, Owl in Winnie the Pooh and a ton of other cartoons). His friends called him "Whit". He had more impact on my life and inspiring me to be a good man than I would have ever known. Whit filled the gap left by the lack of care, abuse and eventual abandonment left by one of my parents who ran away from home. He was the voice that gave us hope and told us about the love of God.

I love ya, Whit. R.I.P Hal, your voice echoes forever through the ages, and in my heart.
