In 1956 as Rodan terrorized the mainland of Japan a huge 50 meter reptile named Varan AKA Obaki rose from his saltwater lake in response to the desalination chemicals dropped into it and quickly destroyed the village and headed for the source of his problems in Osaka where he swallowed several tons of explosives and slank into the sea where he was thought to have died. In 1969 Varan was found alive and well and moved to monster island where he would become an ally of Godzilla's leaving alongside Rodan to aid the kaiju king against the monsters Gigan,Ghidorah,Mogu and Bagorah. Varan would come under the thrall of the Kilaaks in 2009 and attack London alongside Gorgo and Ghilaron, but would be freed from their power and fight their monster army.
