Costume is "realistic", but the design isn't. Godzilla is a mutated dinosaur. A dinosaur isn't flatfooted or has a tail that drags behind like a useless lump.

Even though the movie was a big disappointment, it certainly wasn't among the worst films I've seen. I did like the Tatopoulos design. I grew up on the older Classic Godzilla films sitting through marathons and all that but missed much of the 90s and later films.
I admit I enjoyed Batman & Robin, Judge Dredd and even Daredevil more than I did of Emmerich's take on Godzilla but its not as bad as Tank Girl was, lol.
Great job on this commish!

Why do people hate on those movies? I love daredevil but the others are ehh. Still, people act like batman and robin are satanic. Campy is not satanic, people.

I really enjoyed the Godzilla the Series cartoon on Fox.
I'll eventually track down some of the toys based upon it.
I was never a big fan of the campy 60s Adam West Batman since I was more into Green Hornet and Kato but did enjoy the campy homage that was Batman Forever and especially Batman and Robin. I never understood how they were viewed as "Satanic" though.

This is an awesome piece of artwork, and the American Godzilla design is truly awesome, I love it! Although I prefer Godzilla (1998) over Zilla, but they are both awesome kaijus! It would be interesting to see you paint Godzilla (1998), Matt, and not just Zilla.

For the record, this (Zilla) is Godzilla-1998. They're synonymous terms, as they're members of the same species.

Pellchinnn In reply to Pulsarium [2014-06-24 09:16:45 +0000 UTC]
They're members of the same fictional species/design, yes, but Godzilla '98 and Zilla are two different incarnations of this species that go by two different names and that exists in two different fictional universes, despite the two names being used as synonyms by fans.

So that's what you meant in all your comments, had to admit I was confused for quite some time. Still, G98 deserved a better fight with Godzilla (Japanese) like the one in the comics. I would kill for a real fight in a movie.

Pellchinnn In reply to kaijuwarrior [2014-03-20 09:33:33 +0000 UTC]
Indeed, and I understand that! I agree that the creature deserved a much better fight with the Jap. Godzilla. I liked the fight in the Rulers of Earth-comic, but it still felt too much like an extension of the parody from Final Wars, so while I liked the fight I was still kind of disappointed. Especially considering the advertising for the comic promised a REAL fight, I even remember news articles stating that Zilla would have been Godzilla's most deadly foe yet. I think I'd call this false advertising. So I was a little disappointed.
The IDW Zilla and his awesome and iconic design and colouration is undoubtedly what steals the show in the comic, but it's the over-focus on Godzilla having to win over Zilla in 70-90% of the fight (and the fact that a human soldier notes that Zilla would have died if he had stayed to fight Godzilla) that ruins the experience of this long-awaited "real" fight between these two awesome legendary monsters and that makes the fight come off as silly and childish (much like the fight in Final Wars) and not living up to expectations. I actually had hopes about this comic-fight and was looking forward to it, but from here on I don't think I'm gonna expect something better to come out of merchandise focused on Jap. Goji, considering most Godzilla-fans hate Zilla and G98. I would be very surprised if there would someday in the future actually be a real fight between the monsters.
Personally, seeing the American Godzilla in the same universe as the Japanese Godzilla is very confusing, there's no respect for the films in this, so I wouldn't want them to meet at all. But the damage has already been done with Final Wars and Rulers of Earth so I guess you'll have to make the best out of it. With this in mind, I'd say it could be nice with a movie-continuation on Final Wars where Godzilla has to battle a much more powerful, larger and more awesome-looking Zilla that is actually a real foe and not just a creature people want to see in parodies. Seeing as the end of the fight from Final Wars was used in the comic, but in the comic Zilla survived being tossed into a building and almost being burned by Godzilla's atomic breath. So maybe, just maybe, the Final Wars Zilla survived aswell and buried itself under the Sydney Opera House and would later mutate into a much more worse monster, maybe due to radiation from Godzilla's beam?

Dante-Kain In reply to Pellchinnn [2014-05-29 05:35:34 +0000 UTC]
Well, just speaking from realism, Zilla did in fact die from a few missiles. He really wouldn't stand much of a chance against any of the other kaiju, let alone Big G himself. Maybe Zilla Jr. from the animated series could try, since he has his own beam and all.

Pellchinnn In reply to Dante-Kain [2014-05-30 11:35:46 +0000 UTC]
Well, I guess things could be changed, you could of course change it so that G98 would actually stand and/or win a battle against any kaiju, regardless of him having been killed by missiles in the past. In fact, his past could be re-written aswell, if it doesn't suit someone. That's why we have fan-fiction. Afterall, we are talking about fictional movie monsters.

I've always liked Zilla, and now I recognize that Zilla shouldn't be compared to Gojira but instead regarded as a completely different kaiju. Zilla has its own appeal and the only reason people hate Zilla is because it was being sold as Gojira when it isn't Gojira at all.

I've always loved his look to,Zilla is one of my fav Giant Monsters.I think the reason people hate him is cause of the following...
-He is much smaller and weaker then godzilla, and shouldn`t have his name
-He spent most of his/she movie Hiding instead of rampageing like fans are use to
-He Can`t spit atomic beams or withstand missiles
-He is in CGI instead of the traditional Rubber suit
-His existence is possably bad timeing after godzilla died in Godzilla vs. Destoroyah
But even with that,i still feel for him.

When you title a movie with the reputation that the Japanese Godzilla has, you got to stick with it. The 98 monster is a more realistic take on Godzilla, but that's not what Godzilla fans wanted, and that's why a high majority of them hate the 98 movie. It even won the award for worst remake ever. All the 98 Zilla needed was an atomic breath, high resiliency and to not run from the military, and the movie wouldn't be hated so much.

I agree on your comment, but to be honest. I loved the 1998 movie. Because it wasn't all about destruction and hell. And they just made this Godzilla more interesting to learn, he hided in most of the movie, which I admit was a bit irritating. But it also made him more mysterious than the old Godzilla. I love the old one, but when it comes to the both. I prefer the 1998 Godzilla. On my opinion though

The purist inside me says that's his only redeeming quality. The open-mind inside me says he's just as legit as the King himself- just not in the same class. He's king of the lower class.

Confession central:
He's actually one of my favorite kaiju. His look is just plain badass. It's different from Goji, yet the inspiration is completely obvious. People complain that he's not Godzilla. Well, he isn't! So what exactly are you complaining about?
Yeah. He's a different monster entirely. More realistic. Maybe a bit TOO realistic- though they did good. Not great, but good. The only reason I still watch that is because of the big man himself.

For what the movie is, it is actually quite enjoyable. I gave it a second watch and it's actually pretty good. Aside from the shitty dialogue and the acting, Zilla is actually a nice character. I appreciate his streamlined design and agility as opposed to the bulky, slow moving original Goji design. Not saying its better, I just appreciate it. All they needed to do was make fire come out of his mouth and make him indestructible

Very nice! And I've always loved the look too. I've found room for both after a while. I mean, the film wouldn't have existed without Toho's consent. And it's not like Toho turned a blind eye to them. They saw the sculpts. They read the script. They were okay with everything until the fan's reaction.
And yes, this is coming from someone who cursed and damned the film for a long time. But it just makes sense. And here's another thing: People point out the obvious knock offs of JP, Aliens and the Beast from 20,000 Fathoms. Well, what about the Terminator ripoffs in Gvs. King Ghidorah? The "Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Arch" ripoffs in Godzilla and Mothra: Battle For Earth? The Transformers, Go-Bots and Power Rangers "Megazord" transformations in Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla II? The Hello Kitty nods with Little Godzilla in Godzilla vs SpaceGodzilla? And finally, the Colonial Marines vs. the Aliens being mirrored in Godzilla vs. Destoroyah? Honestly, it's really nothing new.
That's not me trying to put either character down. I'm just saying it's nothing we haven't seen before. So I'm okay with it all now.

I think the fact that he was brought down by a mere 12 missiles or something like that really bothers a lot of people. It's true, the movie could have been a lot better but... I don't really remember the movie being terrible like everyone makes it out to be. It was more about the drama surrounding the creature and the fear it evoked than the actual battle between it and the people of New York.
In any case, a lot of people also complain about the character being CG, but honestly, a guy in a rubber suit just looks silly these days. I know Toho kept doing it for several movies after this, but even there it looked dated, despite how awesome the effects in the Millennium series otherwise were (and how cool Godzilla 2000's design was in general). As for the complaint that Zilla looked "nothing like Godzilla", I say that's a bogus claim. Sure his posture is more horizontal, like a dinosaur, and his feet and claws and everything are more reptilian than the traditional depiction of Godzilla, but he's still got several of the basic characteristics. He's big (stating the obvious, but it sort of needs to be stated), he's got the same basic spine pattern, his body and spines are of roughly the same coloration as some of the depictions of Godzilla (particularly Showa-era), and he's bipedal. I think if he so much as stood upright more, people would think he looks a lot closer to an updated Godzilla. His head is also a bit different, but I think that just makes it less human and more realistic. Godzilla's head had always been very human, from the very beginning. Even Millennium series had that issue to a degree.
That said, I love your artwork here. The colors really pop nicely without clashing, it's sort of reminiscent of old comic books.

The problem sadly, is that many people are used to that destructive scene of Godzilla destroying the city... Again. And don't give a chance to watching a new Godzilla who is more of a scared and confused monster which in my opinion I thought it was more interesting than a fat dragon destroying the city several times.

My only issue with the design has always been the excessive chin.
