Description

Godzilla Neo - THE LEGENDARY GODZILLA

Height: 100 meters

Mass: 90,000 metric tons

TYPE 2 - Warrior Class (possible God Class status, requires more study)

Bio:

In the wake of the early 20th century’s reintroduction to the concept that man is not the sole master of Earth, a secret organization, code-named MONARCH, was founded under President Truman. At first, the clandestine group was small and modestly funded, but on the day GODZILLA I was reported to United World News by Steve Martin in 1954, an emergency meeting was held between the President’s advisors and MONARCH, with the intent of bolstering resources and personnel in order to keep pace with the new forms of life crawling out of the woodwork, and if possible, remain one step ahead. It’s not exactly clear why MONARCH never officially collaborated with the JSDF or the UNGCC, outside of standard intelligence briefings and friendly expressions of international support. To the Japanese, MONARCH felt like a smaller, obligatory cousin that represented little more than a manifestation of the paranoia possessed by the world’s strongest nation that it might suffer the same monster-infested fate as its eastern ally. Little did they know that The American-based organization was on to something BIG...

In 2014, MONARCH, while struggling to maintain anonymity, also struggled to help the US military contain an outbreak of MUTO’s - Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organisms (MONARCH’s internal terminology for kaiju), specifically the SHINOMURA species (named by Ishirō Serizawa), as the respective male and female counterparts were set on a collision course for the West Coast.

At the same time, the UNGCC recorded mass movements in the Pacific. Kaiju were practically fleeing from...SOMETHING.

A tectonic disturbance was detected in the deepest part of the Pacific, and a massive Shape was seen moving towards Honolulu. Attempts to warn the US military proved tricky thanks to the Shinomura’s EMP ability, but the Navy detected it soon enough...not that they could have done anything to stop it.

A massive, terrible shape rose from the sea and nearly annihilated Honolulu in the process. A gigantic creature, one of the largest kaiju on record, and awoken by the reemergence of its ancient enemies in the modern world.

The LEGENDARY GODZILLA had awoken.

The monster’s resemblance to the Gojirasaurus family was astonishing. Scientists scrambled to classify the creature, and near as anyone could figure, it is widely regarded as some sort of ancestral super species to the known Gojirasaurus family. This theory is further supported by MONARCH’s own records of cave murals and ancient people’s depictions of Godzilla-like petroglyphs found in dig sites around the world (though MONARCH kept this information largely to itself, under the guise of “need to know” used to justify decades of information hoarding).

These ancient recordings of Godzilla-like creatures, created far before the “birth” of Godzilla I in 1954, suggests that this monster has existed in its current state for millennia, largely unchanged since time began.

His ancient, battle-scarred body, as well as the old world’s records of the creature locked in combat with other monsters, leads scientists to believe that the LEGENDARY GODZILLA arises every few millennia to fight enemies old and new. The Shinomura, being an instinctual foe from the monster’s era (which possibly dates back to BEFORE the dinosaurs), brought the legendary beast back out of hibernation.

It is not known as of this writing how the current Godzilla will react to his ancient ancestor reappearing in the world. One thing is for sure - it could be the war of monsters to end all monster wars.

ABILITIES/ASPECTS:

  • Incredibly huge and armored body makes him nearly impervious to physical damage
  • Atomic breath
  • Old and slow body
  • Possible healing factor...most abilities still unknown

I've been mixed about the 2014 design. I love your design and improved on my biggest peeve about it. The feet. They now resemble feet and not fleshy logs with toe nails hanging off.

I've been following Godzilla Neo since 2009 and I hope this means there's more to come to it

It is designed that way to resemble sauropod dinosaurs. Makes since considering the sizes involved.

Daaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnggggggg...  And at 100 meters, he's the biggest Big G in Neo, no doubt. (Until Shin and Earth, but we'll get to that bridge eventually.)  I would be interested to see this design of Legendary Godzilla next to Godzilla II(The main Neo Godzilla), just to juxtapose how big he is, and how they differ as well as look alike.  Love how he's not that dissimilar to the Monsterverse original, just with more scars, and the spines showing some breaks, and a little bit of spiky chin. XD

Let me guess, Shinomura is some kind of combination of the MUTOs from the movie, and the beast from the prequel comic, huh?  I've seen you do this before with the Neo redesigns, combining good aspects of two monsters with some relation, while dropping the more janky aspects.  So I'm fully expecting to see that with the next entry. XD

Also, I wonder, he encountered Ghidorah in the past, huh?

(And will you handle the monsterverse King Kong in the same way?  Referred to as The Legendary Kong?  If anyone can pull off that continuity headache, I know it's you.)

"Oh, no, there goes Tokyo! Oh, no, it's GODZILLA! Weeeoo" - Blue Öyster Cult, Spectres

Sorry, couldn't resist.

This version does look more fearsome than the original "man in a rubber suit" in the original movies.
If the Navy got word soon enough, they could've evacuated Honolulu (and, presumably, Pear Harbor Navy Base) - at least, one could hope.

After so many years... Wow, what a return to form. Your art has definitely improved tenfold compared to older entries. Definitely see how working with IDW has helped with the more elaborate details, so it makes me excited to see where things go.

Now for the design itself...

It's solid. Very solid. It keeps a lot of Legendary's core characteristics, but there are subtle adjustments that help differentiate and distinguish it from the original. The hunched pose loosely reminds me of the Proto-GMK, where they tried to make Godzilla more horizontal; though I'm sure in this case, it's simply from his massive bulk, which works well with the design and stature. And is that the AniGoji goatee I see there? Nice! I will say, the battle scars and broken spines are my favorite aspects of this Godzilla. Really curious to see where this goes moving forward. Eager to see your take of the Shinomura--which by the description, are redesigns of the MUTO creatures from the 2014 movie, and not necessarily the death swarm worm thing from the graphic novel prequel (in the same vein that your version of Deutalios is just the Godzilla The Series' Giant Rats given a name and not the fish/rat hybrid from the scrapped version of Biollante).

(1) If you're going to do another series of these, I'm so happy.

(2) if it's only the current Monsterverse, that's still great.  But in the event you're feeling super ambitious, more unused monsters in the Toho universe (like Redmoon, Dogolas, Sasori, etc.), and comic/manga monsters (Trigon, Lord Howe Monster, Raban, etc.) would definitely be awesome to see.

Hey, it's back! Really loving the art direction you took on this. Granted, I was kinda hoping a Godzilla Neo revival might take a more personal spin with the universe's bio flare, but I suppose sticking with the old "Crisis of Infinite Earths" approach of the old series still works
