I'm glad that, based on the post-credit scene, they're building Godzilla up to be a much more powerful force than Kong. Nothing against Kong, but the idea that he's even near Godzilla's level seems silly and a bit insulting.

This is really fantastic, one of your best works yet!

That's over-estimating it a bit there.

Kong isn't even fully grown, for one, and when he is he'll be more than capable of handling Godzilla in a fight. He's got strength, intellect, agility, stamina/endurance, and ferocity to put Godzilla on the defensive quickly. if anything, the most likely outcome will be a stalemate, for a far larger and more imposing threat will surface, thus forcing them to unite to defeat a mutual enemy.

While I guarantee that they won't have a real battle and will end up teaming up, I disagree that he's stronger or smarter (no reason to think either though Godzilla has quite a lot of mass on his side which would imply superior strength) and highly doubt he has more endurance. Godzilla crossed the entire Pacific Ocean in a few days and seemed no worse for it. We have no idea what he's done before the events of the film and I'd be surprised if he hasn't had some feats that would make crossing an ocean look small in comparison.

As as far as durability goes, Godzilla apparently handled a massive atomic warhead without major issue and if Godzilla:Awakening is canon a much larger asteroid impact didn't have much of an impact. By comparison, Kong seems to be at least slightly injured by napalm. Again, not trying to discredit Kong but Godzilla has pretty consistently been on an entirely different level. I imagine they'll maintain that in future films with Kong as a faster but overall fragiler combatant and Godzilla as the slow but essentially unstoppable force that deals with the largest threats. That'll almost certainly culminate in a massive Earth Kaiju vs Ghidorah showdown or something like that.

Is there any actual source for the claim he isn't fully grown? I've heard a lot of people mention it but never an official source. Not that I'm doubting it or anything, just that it I've never seen proof.

Godzilla is more adapt at swimming and traversing through the ocean. He exerted about as about as much effort as a shark or crocodile does when traversing through water, which is hardly any. It's his element.

Strength wise, going how powerful real apes are, Kong has a massive advantage. And given that Kong is more intelligent than any of the apes that exist, who are vastly intelligent and are 2nd only to humans, it isn't hard to imagine Kong being superior to Godzilla in intellect.

Even as an adolescent, Kong is taking on multiple Skullcrawlers, including the largest & most formidable one, Ramarak, while also withstanding intense military assault beforehand. There's proof from many interviews from the producers, director and those at Legendary that state Kong is an adolescent and will grow much, much larger and be more than capable of taking on Godzilla head-on without difficulty in 2020.

Kong wasn't hurt by the napalm, but instead (and like Godzilla who also needs to breath) the intense heat burned the very oxygen around him and combined with the deadly chemicals, made him groggy. What little, if actual any harm, was done to Kong at all it was superficial in all their assaults. But, then again, he's only an adolescent. If Godzilla were an adolescent, who would probably be the same size of Kong, he'd also be taken off guard by such assault. Then again, the missiles and tank fire seemed to hurt him on the bay bridge to the point he smashed through it. Not to mention the wounds the Mutos managed to inflict upon him.

This is one of the many sites that blatantly states that Kong is an adolescent and is still growing in size & strength.

kongsized.kongskullislandmovie…

And much to your chagrin, Godzilla actually was hurt by the atomic bomb, as he remained hidden for nearly 60 years before returning to kill the Mutos. The graphic novel, Godzilla: Aawakening, actually doesn't have any valid continuity to the film at all and boasts many errors. The following nuclear tests were to drive Godzilla out and kill him, but apparently they missed as Godzilla had sought refuge in the ocean depths to heal his wounds.

The official art book of the film states this.

So, your declaration that Kong isn't as powerful or formidable as Godzilla is greatly false in every aspect.

Given that both species are Alpha/Apex Predators, I cannot see why they would not be considered equals in might when fully grown. Why do you not just accept this instead? It'll save a lot of time.

While I do think that's what the creators of the film were going for, you have to admit that Godzilla has a really terrible body plan for a swimming animal. His jagged dorsal plates and bulky thighs would make swimming difficult, plus he has almost no anatomical features that really scream marine besides his gills and webbed hands. A real animal shaped that way wouldn't have an easy time swimming at all, let alone across an ocean. But that's the way people design creatures, unfortunately.

I honestly don't know what to think as goes intelligence. Godzilla has been everything from a traditional dumb-reptile stereotype to human-level in intelligence. I don't think we've seen enough of him to determine how smart he is. Especially since our understanding of non-mammalian intelligence is pretty rough compared to what we know about primates.

I've never seen a study supporting the idea that apes are especially powerful compared to many animals of similar size, that seems to be a pop-culture thing more than anything, they have a lot of arm strength but that's comparable or inferior to the strongest muscles of living crocodilians which Godzilla seems to be closely related to. They're built differently and therefore distribute their muscles differently. In absolute terms I'd say Godzilla and Kong are probably evenly matched as goes muscle mass and potential strength. Legendary's Kong's highly human-like body plan so, if they're being realistic, his body isn't especially suited to maximizing his strength but using it more precisely. Being that this is a Hollywood film and not a documentary, I think you're probably right that they'll give Kong strength and precision in unrealistic doses, though I doubt he'll be depicted as stronger. I suspect we might even get a shoving match where neither can overpower the other, possibly leading up to Godzilla blasting Kong with atomic breath or something like that.

I haven't seen the movie yet, just the trailers. My impression is that the napalm attack really did a number on him but I'm totally willing to accept that I'm wrong. I'll know for sure next Monday when I see the movie!

I have to wonder if Godzilla's response to the missiles was purely because they hit his gills. That's what a lot of people seemed to be arguing for.

Glad to see confirmation of that, I appreciate it. I haven't been following Kong as closely as I did for Godzilla for a number of reasons and haven't really had a chance to scour the website for information.

I never read the Godzilla art book and was basing my opinion on what I knew from the film and Awakening which I read once in a book store, but didn't really have a compulsion to buy it. If you take Awakening out of the equation than I'm perfectly comfortable accepting that he really was injured.

I want to be clear that Godzilla being overall more powerful than Kong is just my impression based on what I've seen so far. I'm not trying to make any definitive statement about the series and I can't claim to know exactly what Legendary has in mind. I'm just explaining/defending the impression that I've been getting so far and I'm not looking to start any argument or discredit Kong as a character. I'll also admit that I'd prefer Godzilla be the strongest "good" monster in the series purely because I like Godzilla more, but I'm interested to see what they do either way. At the end of the day I'm just happy we're getting new kaiju movies at all!

Beautiful art as always.  I do feel however, that the positioning and expressions featured in this piece make Godzilla seem more as an underdog.  Of course, that in no way detracts from the quality of the work and I could spend ours just staring at it and soaking in the detail.  Thanks for another feast for our eyes.

It was Toho, the creator of Godzilla, who had this idea so that it would be on par with Godzilla.
I would add that Toho has an admiration for King Kong and he wanted to buy rights from the Americans.

Charlie2210 In reply to sin2345 [2017-03-04 17:00:09 +0000 UTC]

This favoritism is due to the fact that the Americans defeated the Japanese during the Second World War. Think of the Hawaiians who died because of the nuclear bombing of the Nazi Japanese during surprise attack of Pearl Harbor. Well the Americans send them the device, a nuclear bomb full in their mouths in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The victory of King Kong (which symbolizes the USA) is a reminder of this victory.
