Description When I first conceived of cataloguing Zelda monsters in my own way and working out relations, the first thing I wanted to do (or maybe second, after sorting out the Gohma headache) is to split between the clearly-octopus octarok and the weird squid ones from the games whose art I hate. Thing is, if I had looked more closely at the models from the first 3D games, I would have seen that they actually both blended a variety of cephalopod features.
Nonetheless, I wanted to make a clear break here, and thankfully in the interim years, games have established this kind as a SEAocta, so there you go. Still weird having that suffix on a squid (I was thinking ikarok would have been a good name) but it's really fine. And yeahh I put way too much effort into all those markings... but it looked incomplete without them.
I was tempted to make the mineocta full-on nautilus, but it's clearly meant to be in this family. Maybe a larva, maybe an offshoot.

wind waker's octorocks were pretty out there, but the big ones were also pretty clearly some kinda mutant. interestingly if you look close on the models in wind waker, you can see that they have a second syphon underneath and only seven tentacles which makes me wonder if the "mouth" on an octorok is actually a specialized arm.

not that octoroks ever seem to actually have eight legs! maybe ocrorok is just a general term for all rock hurling waterlife in hyrule.

Ha, I didn't know that about that model..
I'm pretty sure the wii and wiiu ones have eight arms, but i could be wrong! I do know that a male octopus has one shorter tentacle he uses to canoodle with, and loses it in mating.. and I do realize it's anime tradition to confuse an octopus's siphon with its mouth

also good point about how a lot of names clearly show up on different monsters with similar attributes, as if hiploop just means 'masked guy' or ziclock is 'really big masked guy'   but it's so weird how octaroks broke their every-game streak in TP because they put in rock-spitting tadpoles..

i tell you man, it was digdogger! dude was jealous of octorok's getting into so many games and he paid off the director to ruin the streak! nintendo enemies are notorious for their internal feuds.

It's gotta be fucking hard being a "seen from above" enemy type. You know you're not going to make it to 3d, because viewed from the side, you're just a weird blob. your eye is on top.. your whole life is staring at ceilings.
the 3Ds games have all these 'stack' enemies that are clearly just meant for the "it's overhead but there's depth!!" gimmick.. doubt those will ever reappear either.
