Description
Hey guys! I'm going to be revisiting my old Legend of Zelda project, where I drew up every enemy, boss and principle character from the 1986 classic. It was the first big project I ever undertook as an artist, now that I've since graduated school I felt it was appropriate to revisit it with my newfound know-how and improved sensibilities. You can see the 2011 entries here:deimos-remus.deviantart.com/gaβ¦

Overworld Enemy #1: Octorok
"A type of octopus that lives above ground. There are two types , red and blue. Watch out for the blue ones. They're mean. They spit out rocks at Link."
- The Legend of Zelda Manual
Octoroks travel and attack in groups, using their grinder-like teeth to cut and chew into rockfaces, giving them plenty of ammunition. Breaking down rocks gives these bizarre cephalopods not only a projectile weapon, but minerals contained in said rocks are absorbed as nutrients. Once rocks are broken down to size, the air contained in the back of the creature's elastic and hollow, cavernous head deflates and acts like a bellow, propelling rocks forward at a high velocity out of its cannon-like mouth. Though Octoroks are on the weak side of the spectrum, their size coupled with their accuracy can prove to be quite formidable if not prepared.Β

So, definitely a good design, but again, one that I just personally donβt really like. I love seeing legitimately threatening versions of the enemies in the original Zelda, but I also always liked to think of some of the monsters just as Hyruleβs flora and fauna. Some of them will never actively attack you and much like an ordinary animal, it attacks when provoked or when it feels threatened. In that sense, Iβve never considered Octoroks to be monsters, or even predators, just their ability to spit rocks from their mouths was a defense mechanism in my mind. Certainly good, just not one that I like.

Interesting read in the description.Β I've always thought more along the lines that Octoroks naturally produce their projectiles, like a bezoar or something.

I'm not much of a Zelda fan, but this series rocks! I especially like how you made the Octorok more realistic. Great job!
