Description As you see the time of napoleonic geekyness isn't over for me.

In the picture you can see my main (and one of all-time favourites) character, a French general named Maurice Bonaventure Dautierre. The lad is a typical example of Boney's words, saying that "Every French soldier carries a marshal's baton in his knapsack". From a modest dragoon trooper, through an infantry officer, to a major general. Except of that, the character is spicied with traits praised by the napoleonic ethos, he's a stubborn and brave lad, who knows how to use his fists and sword and goes into battle with his hair blewn through and flame of excitement in the eyes and heart. Apart from that, Dautierre posseses a rather bawdy sense of humour and slightly coarse manners (if it's possible for a Frenchman). What's most important the general is a huge "amateur" of champagne (or alcohol in general) and the opposite sex A true "beau sabreur" immortalised by such names like Colbert, Saint-Croix, Montbrun, Augereau and the most famous of them all, Antoine Lasalle.

The Background pic: Fernand Cormon, The Battle of Aspern-Essling, XIX century.

I'm not very good with French uniforms, but this looks like a marshal's uniform to me (except for the hat).

The most characteristic thing for French napoleonic marshalls' uniforms were white waist sashes with gold embroidery and white plume edging of the hat. Also, the full dress was additionally heavily embroidered with an oak leaf motif along the stitches.

What's neat about the lace is that it was an oak-leaf-acorn and laurel combination- which was a nod back to the Roman times of the oak and laurel wreaths.

I really like this O.o. The uniform is perfect save for the sash that I don't recognize :/. Did you draw the background as well because if so I must say that I really like it.
Another question, why is he missing a glove on his swordshand?

Kaiser-Conti In reply to Seimour [2011-01-06 18:39:27 +0000 UTC]

The sash indicates that he's a general de division, blue vertical stripes are for a general de brigade, and the background? naw, it's just Fernand Cormon's painting depicting the battle of Aspern-Essling as for the glove, take a closer look at his left hand, he holds the "missing" glove there

I believe it does. Usually not a big fan of Napoleon's generals because half of them were unable to even use napoleonic tactics, but I'd gladly follow this man into battle.

Ah yes! Antoine Lasalle, the one who said "le hussar qui n'est pas mort à trente ans est un jean-foutre". His death at Wagram would prove a great blow to french cavalry in later campaigns.

Nice work. French general uniforms are hard to draw, with all that intricate gold lace. I must salute you for this.

Great work on this one! The amount of detail is mind boggling in a good way! The boots really look like they are made out of shiny leather too. Now, all you need to do is .... draw even more!
