Description
Half a league half a leagueHalf a league onward
All in the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred:
'Forward, the Light Brigade
Charge for the guns' he said
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.
'Forward, the Light Brigade!'
Was there a man dismay'd?
Not tho' the soldiers knew
Some one had blunder'd:
Theirs not to make reply,
Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do & die,
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.
Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon in front of them
Volley'd and thunder'd;
Storm'd at with shot & shell,
Boldly they rode & well,
Into the jaws of Death,
Into the mouth of Hell
Rode the six hundred.
Flash'd all their sabres bare,
Flash'd as they turned in air,
Sabring the gunners there,
Charging an army while
All the world wonder'd:
Plunged in the battery-smoke
Right thro' the line they broke;
Cossack & Russian
Reel'd from the sabre-stroke
Shatter'd & sunder'd.
Then they rode back, but not
Not the six hundred.
Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon behind them
Volley'd & thunder'd;
Storm'd at with shot & shell,
While horse & hero fell,
They that had fought so well
Came thro' the jaws of Death
Back from the mouth of Hell,
All that was left of them
Left of six hundred.
When can their glory fade?
O the wild charge they made!
All the world wonder'd.
Honour the charge they made!
Honour the Light Brigade,
Noble six hundred!
poem by Alfred, lord Tennyson

Why the Polish pennants? Also, didn't British light cavalry switch to the red coat early during Victoria's reign?

The lance pennons are obviously an error I made several years ago - the colours should be reversed. As for the uniform colour, you are right, but the 17th were the only lancer regiment allowed to wear blue.

It was a terrible blunder - but please remember that Lord Cardigan and his surviving brigade members did BRIEFLY reach and take the guns.

Nicely drawn. I wish I can draw cavalry charge pics like you did. My favorite part of the army was always the cavalry, and you did not disappoint with that drawing of yours. I might draw mines soon maybe with the 7th cavalry. Anyway, nice pic and keep it up!

well... Terry Brighton mentions one Butler from that regiment ...William..but according to Brighton he was a private
did he wrote his memories in a book "A descriptive account of the famous charge of the light brigade" ? anyway...he's somewhere ot there I'm sure of it

Ah, he could have been a private then, that side of my family is a bit hazy, I'll have to pass a message onto my Grandfather, he knows more about it than me, but it's still rather humbling to have a relative present at the charge. Very brave men.

I´ve read about this! It was in the book "The Worlds Biggest Mistakes". The pointless arguing among the higher officers caused the deaths of the brave 600. Glory to their memory! (How the hell do I get that salute-smiley?!)

well not only the arguing between Lucan and Cardigan... lord Raglan gave an enigmatic order... hard to interprete...also captain nolan who delivered the order wasn't able to explain what Raglan want to say...he was too excited and wanted the cavalry to charge immediately...Nolan's conversation with Lucan was very "hot" so to speak and he pointed the light Brigade's target -this was a mistake...people claim that during the charge he wanted to undo his terrible mistake and he tried to focus attention on him...he probably wanted to "re-direct" the charge on the Csuseway heights..but then he was hit by a Russian shell...
Lucan was an idiot just like his brother in law Cardigan but his experience in this campaign said that he has to obey Raglan's orders and nothing more...So he thought that he has nothing to say in this case and ordered Cardigan to lead the charge... this case is very difficult and complicated so it's hard to say who takes the whole responsibility for that unnecessary carnage
I fully recommend Terry Brighton's book "Hell riders" about that charge ...it explains a lot
