I made this work with GIMP 8DDD You select the horse and the outside of the layer then you make a new layer and invert it so you can put the color in 8DDDDD

i am turning palomino to a white horse....i assume id do the same thing only different colors?

You could do the same type thing, I suppose. I think I'd suggest duplicating the horse layer and desaturating it, and then lowering the opacity until it looked right. After that I believe you could play with the hue/saturation of the original until the horse looked like it was supposed to. You might also play with the brightness/contrast. I think I'll actually go try it - I think it's about time to revamp these tutorials and add some more to them!

well I had actually found a different image to use and now I just need to make 1 of the socks brown.
How can I do that?

Hmmmm that's a bit more difficult.. I'd use the clone tool and clone another leg (or the part of the leg you need), then blend it in.

OMG, I found this like a year ago, then I couldn't find it again. I was so sad. It worked so well the first time.
Anyway. SO, I randomly stumbled across it now. But yay! I shall never lose it again!

Hey, great tutorial. How would you suggest making a grulla with flaxen mane and tail? I've tried so many things it's not funny...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kalaera In reply to criminalsheep [2009-05-13 00:26:46 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!

You'd probably have to start out by doing the grulla part and then masking the mane and tail and doing those seperately. It'd be interesting! I haven't ever tried that, but as soon as I get a free minute I will, and I'll let you know if I succeed!

criminalsheep In reply to Kalaera [2009-05-13 03:59:54 +0000 UTC]

Cheers. I've tried using a Dun or a palomino and overlaying a layer of colour to get the right shade, but I just can't get it to work. I should try turning a palomino to sepia tone, then burning it and fixing the points etc... hummmm....

Kalaera In reply to criminalsheep [2009-05-14 22:19:13 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm that might work. Or you might could find a light chestnut and desaturate it a little. I'm not sure.

criminalsheep In reply to Kalaera [2009-05-15 04:03:26 +0000 UTC]

Phew. Well, I think I've pretty much got it as good as I can, but it took forever to figure out a way to get everything right.

I started by turning a palomino stock to sepia, then burned it in and painted on it on low opacity to get the grulla/silver dapple colouring, but lost too much detail with the burning. So then I desaturated the original and overlayed that which got back the detail except on the face. So then I copied and pasted the face, mane and tail from the original onto seperate, transparent layers which I had to set to overlay and duplicate to get the right shade without being too bright. And I'm just going to black out the legs because I can't put the markings in without losing all detail, and then burn in the dorsal stripe. Eeep! Glad I finally got it pretty much right though.

I'll post it when I finish and send you a link.

Amazing tutorial! I have just one little stupid question: In question #7, which one would be considered the original layer? The layer with the cut out white horse, the 1st overlay color, or the 2nd overlay color?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kalaera In reply to equine--xxxo [2008-04-15 20:02:39 +0000 UTC]

That would be the original white horse layer. I'm glad this was helpful!!!

Thanks!!!

equine--xxxo In reply to Kalaera [2008-04-17 00:22:35 +0000 UTC]
