I have photoshop elements I believe, so some of the things you listed I don't have. I've tried to improvise, but it looks horrid. If you can would you help me.

Great tutorial.. it really helped
But I'm just confused.. whe I did the ctrl click part it wouldn't select it.. it just went to the move tool

When you ctrl-click the thumbnail for a layer in your layers palette, it selects the contents of that layer.
