Description *****

“Princeps!”

The sensori's words cut across the background electric hum and the muted thunder of ancient machinery on the Warlord's bridge.

“I have detected a small fortification ahead..lightly defended”

“Moderati, analysis?”

Moderati Rasmus was bathed in the soft green light from the auspex, concentrating on the data feeds from the ancient instrument, the scrolling information could be seen reflecting in the surface of his eyes;

“My princeps, there is a single super heavy tank and some minor base defences, along with standard infantry. They pose no real threat, but we can't leave the outpost behind for our ground forces.”

Princeps Kalgo-Ras smiled,

“As usual, you have seen right to the heart of the matter moderati, we shall attack and level this outpost before continuing. Run the weapon servitors through a test cycle and steersman bring her around 17 degrees. We walk!”

Encased in the amniotic fluid, Kal's body felt almost nothing. Enshrouded in the manifold, Kal's mind felt everything. He could feel the metal machine within him stride across the desert. The arid sand stretched ahead to the cliffs where the outpost lay. Behind the engine, the sun was sinking on the horizon, bathing the sand in golden fire. A light breeze stirred the sand and caused the void shields to sing as the grains hit the static field. From his vantage point 60 meters high, he zoomed in his view and could almost taste the atmosphere from the sensors buried over the titan's skin. They had been walking all day and encountered only light resistance so far. The rebellion had been on a planetary scale, but the rebels were ill prepared for the engines of Legio Excelsior which were passing near the Caleb system when the distress call came in.
The engine's feet left huge depressions in the ground and Kal could feel the gyro straining to compensate for the enormous mass shifting on the sands. Left...right...left...the feeling of immensity and power almost felt like a drug, but the fear of the shadow in his mind always kept Kal from becoming lost in the abyss. The engine Vindicarus Rex had been dealing death to the Emperor's foes for nearly seven millenia and the machine spirit was strong. So strong to be almost tangible. It was a feral thing, from a time almost beyond comprehension. Always present when controlling the mighty machine, hovering at the edge of conscious thought. Many princep's and crews had gone before and part of them always lingered within the ancient interface between man and metal god.

“Moderati, we are close, give me targeting solutions on the main threats.”

“Already done, my princeps! Exloading them to you now.”

“Very well, let us teach these rebels the meaning of the Emperor's wrath! Fire at will!”

The shadow at the back of Kal's mind howled with glee at the anticipation of conflict. The titan shuddered as it unleashed the firepower of a small army in it's initial volley. Cannon rounds exploded from barrels, missiles flew from launch tubes and through it all; the distinctive scream of a turbo laser searing through the air to vapourise metal, flesh and masonry.

The outpost's fate was sealed.

*****

Finished! My first 'original' work without copying a model or a photo and it was a bugger! (Warlord Titan and the 40k I.P. belong to Games Workshop! ). I should have just gone with something simpler, but I've been reading Dan Abnett's 'Titanicus' and it inspired me! Even had to write a small story as background for it.

Done on A4 with 2H-8B Pencils and then scanned - see below.

**I have replaced the image with a higher contrast/saturation one to capture detail lost from scanning - suggested by [link] . Hope that's ok! Yes you can now see I moved my signature as I couldn't be bothered to draw something in the bottom right! Original (yuck) scan I uploaded is here: [link] . Any issues with the high contrast version, please let me know.**

Please comment and critique as any feedback appreciated. I've not got the light correct, but I bit off more than I could chew. Enjoy!

Good Emperor man, well with something of a titan there really is no meaning to the word: OVERKILL!

Well done with the story and picture both. I enjoyed the descriptions in detail and how the titan truly has a mind of it's own.

Glory to Him who is on Terra.

Good work on the terrian & background

I think you have a grasp of linework in your drawings, but your shading is really lacking. I mean this as in, lets say in this picture the sunlight is clearly shown to be to the left & behind the titan, but your shading on it doesnt actually reflect where the light is coming from, it's just a bunch of gray without really much tonal change. I think you would benefit from learning basic principles of light reflection, then you would know where to put shadows and where to put highlights etc.

Hope I wasn't too harsh lol, this is still probably one of your best work so far.

Kalgoras In reply to DeVmarine [2011-04-14 13:05:03 +0000 UTC]

No it's not too harsh, I just failed at the lighting as there are so many light sources heh. I didn't get enough contrast from the shadows to show where the sunlight was and only lightly showed the light from the laser and the explosions on the tarmac and areas around it. I tried to put a couple of lights on the titan's legs too and the lights in the fortification, but didn't really define them very well either. I'm reasonably pleased with it as a first attempt, but it was a bit too much to go for. Should have done something simpler and worked up to a battle scene! I'm working on a new project (titan related!) which isn't so complicated, but I'm hoping to improve the quality!

Your comments and criticism are always welcome bud! You are a 40k drawing legend and nobody ever improved without knowing where they are going wrong, so keep it coming!

Much appreciated! - Kal

hmm....not to dampen the mood, but the perspective needs some work, esp. at the feet of the titan and the backside of the bunker gate. but great work anyways!

I just read Titanicus and I must say, your little story really seems like Titanicus. Which is a good thing! awesome drawing, really it is how i imagined the events too.

Thankyou! Yeh I loved Titanicus heh. Tried to use the themes in there for the little story and the piece. It's a bit too 'clean' for a real 40k feel, but it could happen on a newly rebelled world

Heh, true I can't really justify a titan legio countering a rebellion with no other engines...but I had alrady written the story heh.

Any excuse to draw some giant fighting machines

Nice piece straight out of the gate...you've captured the action as it's written very well with the Titan dominating the scene! I'll second the comment about it belonging to an old WH40K rule book...I have an two old Citadel Miniatures catalogues (the red and blue ones) from the very early 90s which is full of this style....oh, now I feel old.

Well my last white dwarf is 205 about 1996...not bought one since

So the stuff i've done is inspired by that 90's style hehe. As a member of the nearly mid 30's club, the old ones are the best!

hairywookiee In reply to Kalgoras [2011-04-10 16:51:17 +0000 UTC]

being ever so slighty post my mid-30's, I was heavily inspired by the same bunch...I haven't seen WD for a long time now but that art was awesome back then...but I'm biased. I keep thinking I should do this huge A2 pencilled WH40K battlescene...not sure if that's mild lunacy as it'd take me months but I'm thinking it's time for a hugely ambitious piece...God knows how I'm gonna scan it in to upload it though. Time for KallKwik methinks!

Hehe, I can't wait to see that if you go ahead! That titan scene was only A4 and it took aaaaggess I need to work on technique a bit first before my next project, but I have something in mind! I've just done a portrait to practice faces, so some feedback would be awesomesauce from a pencil ninja such as yourself! [link]

Thanks bud. I actually thought up that name from just thinking two 'Latin style' impressive words. It wouldn't surprise me if they have been used in different situations, but I've only read 'Titanicus' so far heh. Coincidence, but Vindicator is used a lot in 40k, so derivatives probably everywhere
