Description
This is a sketch of my OC Cathy, from the Spirit Series. She shows up in the third story, MAAN, which I'm currently reposting. I've got a whole character sketch for her, but it's long, so I'm not going to put it up here unless people want me too. It will include spoilers for the stories. As for the drawing itself, yeah, I'd love critique on it, as long as it isn't harsh, but I want to say a few things about it first.
1) Cathy is 50. This drawing makes her look late-thirties/early-forties. I can't draw wrinkles that look decent.
2) I am aware the proportions are slightly off, both with feature placement and the size of her eyes. I was drawing this freehand in English, so didn't have reference charts and whatnot handy.
3) I'm pretty sure the bottom of her nose is asymmetrical, but I finally got a nose looking decent and I'm not about to change it.
4) She's supposed to be rolling her eyes and smirking slightly. I think she ended up being whistful instead.
5) I would have posted a sketch of her earlier except I couldn't get her hair right. But then I was doodling in class and ended up with this cartoon face with the perfect hairstyle, and next thing I knew this had happenedβ¦
So, um, yeah... there she is, folks. I hope you like herβ¦

Cathy! Wow Kali! This looks really impressive! And I noticed how much younger she looks in this pic compared to the story. To be honest, I think she looks like she's in her twenties xD But she looks very good. I love how deeply shaded her eyes are and that nose is amazing! How did you do it?! I can't do noses Dx You did her face shape very well. It looks realistic, and I like the direction she's looking in. She does look a bit peeved And I noticed that her left eye is slightly higher than her right eye, but that's a common problem and I tend to do that a lot too. The iris's are a bit sloppy, but other then that they're prettty good ^-^ I love how you did her hair. It's styled really well and adds to her features. I don't have the patience to do hair like that xD All in all Kali this looks great!
You're getting better at facial features

Yeah, I know she looks way younger than she should. I haven't been able to figure out a way to do realistic wrinkles. If you've got any, I'd love to hear!
I'm glad you like it and approve of how I've done things. The nose is basically a slightly curved line done in light pencil strokes and smudged outwards with my thumb.
And yeah, the eyes... I always get them off, and that's actually closer than a lot of my eyes end up. The irises... Dangit! I hadn't even really noticed that. I blame it on this being the first time I've done them not looking straight ahead.
And yeah, the hair's why I didn't post the portrait until I did. I couldn't get the right style for the life of me!
It really wasn't that hard to do the hair, though. Sketched out the shape, drew in lines to fill it up, smudged a bit, did more lines over top, erased bits and pieces for highlights/gray hairs, and I was done.
I'm really proud of how it turned out, though. I am getting better.

Yeah, it's difficult when you're not used to drawing a lot. I'm still learning now and I've been drawing my whole life It's something you learn over time, and lots of practice. Yeah, I noticed it looked smudged xp I like how it adds to the shadow effect on her nose. It's very good
I'm sloppy at smudging and my art teacher my senior year was anti-smudge so I don't really do it much
What you could use is a curved guidline for her eyes so the look leveled properly, including at angles. Ah, I see xD Personally, I think eyes looking away are easier to do, that's just me
Yeah, when I look at the picture again I see where the gray hairs are. I think that looks nice. Adds to her features and characteristics
Yeah, the hair looks smooth and full. Good method you used there
You should be proud! Yes you are!

I know it is, but I'm definitely seeing signs of improvement. Darn. You don;'t have any tips for me?
Oh well. I really like what smudging can do for a picture. I use it a lot, actually, though crosshatching and smooth shading are probably better strategies. A curved guideline? What would that look like exactly? See, I did that pic on the back of a handout instead of listening to lecture, so I didn't have rulers or anything available. I'd have used 'em otherwise.
They might be, I dunno. Just don't have a lot of practice with them.
Yeah, I'm really proud of the hair. I think it's the best I've done, and it was really fun to do, too!
Try my method. You might be surprised.

Tip? You seemed to have lacked that word in your last comment and I misunderstood Unless I'm being stupid and missed it. Sorry
Alrighty, it's kind of hard to give sketching tips over the internet
It just takes learning a technique, or you can search sketches on dA and see how they're done. That's what I've done in the past and it really helps, but it does take some time x3 Yeah, I like the effect smudging does. Doing it cleanly can be difficult sometimes though. Yeah, I'm not very good at hatching xD Uh, I'll have to show you what I mean in a chat sometime ^^ Yeah, I understand, but you don't need rulers or anything for it x3 That's the beauty of it
I understand
Woot! Fun!
Okay, when I get around to it xD

Well, I meant to put it in! Yeah, I know it is, but anything you tell me might be useful.
I'll look at other sketches, I guess, and see what I can come up with from that. And yeah, I know clean smudging's hard. I've done it long enough I've seen everything, including hands black from graphite.
Oh, good, it's not just me then.
Okay, sounds good! Probably not this weekend. I have Stuff To Do.
I don't? Okay. Just explaining why the eyes were off in the first place. Completely freehand.
Right, of course. For the new account.

Yeah, I don't know if you'll understand this, but instead of drawing in just a line, sketch the line, since you mess up more when you just draw in a flat line. Hopefully you'll understand. I suck horribly at explaining
Okay
Look at all of the ones you can find, from good to bad. You'll learn a lot from them
I've never done anything with graphite, but I do know they make a big mess. Nope
Okay x3 Nope
I know
That happens when you free hand. Maybe

Okay. I think I understand that. Thanks! Sounds like it's going to work. Okay, will do!
Pencil lead is graphite, so you must have done something with it.
I know it does, but that's all I've ever done, really.

Okay Yeah, I know, but I haven't used the artsie stuff, the really messy kind. I've messed around with pastels. Doing decent artwork at my high school is impossible since the art room never had the right supplies. It was annoying. Yeah, I did that for most of my life, but then found an easier and more effective way

KaliPhantom In reply to Coronadofwb [2007-03-03 00:38:58 +0000 UTC]
I haven't used the artsy graphite either. I don't think I'd like it much. It's a soft material. I never even had an art class so I didn't ever get access to the materials the school had. Meh. Didn't care enough then, and don't now. :shrug; And that way would be...?

Coronadofwb In reply to KaliPhantom [2007-03-03 04:02:17 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, and it breaks easily and it's hard to fix. I'm not a good pencil artist either. That wouldn't work for me Mine didn't have much, and if your school was the same then you didn't miss much. I meant with the sketching. Did you mean the sketching? I thought you meant the sketching

KaliPhantom In reply to Coronadofwb [2007-03-03 04:14:28 +0000 UTC]
Pencil's pretty much the only medium I'm good at, actually. I've had the most practice with it... pretty good with ballpoint pen too, but that's about much the same thing. I meant with any sort of supplies. I think they had tempura and acrylic paints, make-your-own canvases, basic pencils and inks...
π: 0 β©: 1
Coronadofwb In reply to KaliPhantom [2007-03-03 04:46:32 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I've done more with pencil then anything else but it's pretty amazing when you find an art medium you've never done before and you're the best at that I suck at pen. I'm the worst at pen. Actually, I'm worst with acrylic painting >_>; Apparently I'm better with watercolor. Feh...Yeah, that's basically what mine had, but they didn't have any decent sketching tools. Everything was vandalized and since no one cares about the artists none of them are ever replaced >.>

I guess so, but I honestly don't see myself as a painter and I know I'm crap with markers. I sketch in pen like I'd sketch in pencil. It's a bit rougher, but I still manage some nice things.
I'm terrible at painting, period.
Yeah, that sounds pretty similar to us, then. No one gives a darn about creative types at all.

Coronadofwb In reply to KaliPhantom [2007-03-03 05:46:39 +0000 UTC]
I hope to become a decent painter one day. Yeah, some things. Most of everything I draw in pen is teh crapness since I can't erase x3 I know, yet they always seem high in demand. Some people even go to high schools to find something they like and get high schoolers to do it and for free. It sucks. That's what happened at my high school. An awesome artists was rigged in a competition. She was lied to what her prize was for winning. Stupid scams. That's one reason it sucks being an artist. Like me here on dA. I was rigged of trades Sorry for the rant

KaliPhantom In reply to Coronadofwb [2007-03-03 20:53:05 +0000 UTC]
Good luck! I'd love to see what your painting's like these days. Gotta be better'n mine. Yeah, you might notice I never actually post my pen stuff...
I take notes in pen, so that's what I tend to doodle in. I did Cathy's hair in pen, when I was trying out designs for it, for example. My doodles aren't nearly as good as the stuff I try for, but they're decent.
I know. I've heard of people being scammed like that for writing too. It really sucks that people will take advantage of someone like that. Don't worry about the rant. I rant too...

I don't have much in traditional painting supplies xD I'll try to work at my sketching though. You should You did? I couldn't tell. It looks like all pencil. Yeah they are
Yeah, lazy butt people who need to be kicked!

Aw, too bad. Hope you get some soon! But sketches from you would be awesome too!
No, really, I shouldn't. Most of them are geometric designs, really small, and very messy. They seriously don't count as art.
Oh, misunderstanding... That sketch I posted was purely pencil, but I've got a few smaller cartoony versions on various pieces of paper that are done in pen.
Or chainsawed...

So, I don't think anyone wants to see a margin full of triangles and stars, that's why! Happens to us all, don't worry. You're probably tired.
I've got limited scanner access, remember, and I don't even know where the paper is anymore.

Bad emotion time, huh? Sorry I haven't been on the IM then.
I still need to read that journal you posted, but wanna talk here? Or get on the IM and talk for a bit now? It says I'm off, but I'm really not.
Heh, it's okay. Just friendly reminders, right? Never hurt. Brain dead, really? Just like the rest of us then.

Yeah, I don't know why. I had a bad emotionaly break down close to this time of the year last year. Maybe it's coming back to haunt me because of the familiarity of the season *shrug* That's okay, you've been busy Sounds good ^^ I don't want to bore with my rants or anything if you don't want to though
Yeah x3 We'd sounds really stupid without reminders, so hugs! lol!

Maybe that's it, simple winter depression. I hope so, 'cause that means it'll be gone soon. Meh, you're not gonna bore me, but you're running out of time... I'm going to bed in about 30 minutes.
Thanks for understanding.
Exactly! We sound stupid enough even without them! All hail the Omniscient Kali!

It looks like you've gotten better at drawing people, good job! She does look a bit young for 50, but I've never liked drawing in wrinkles either. >.<
The hair and lips look the best (I think), mostly because of the shading. It makes everything look more realistic, but it's hard to do without references. If you practiced by drawing people from pictures, it'd give you a better idea about how to shape/shade a face, and then you could freehand even better.

KaliPhantom In reply to Kishamaru [2007-02-02 22:10:57 +0000 UTC]
I think I have, even if I don't draw full faces very often. And yeah, I know she does... if you've got tips on doing wrinkles, let me know. I'd like to just plain know HOW. I do lots of hair and lips, which is probably why. I'm quite proud of the hair this time, esp. since it took me so long to find the right style for it.
People from pictures? Hmm. Maybe I should try that, or from classmates which probably works better. That's where I draw, after all.
