Description From the second I entered the store I knew it was quite unlike any pet-shop I'd ever visited before. Pet stores back home were huge department stores; big chain brands like "Pet World" had pushed all the smaller shops out of business. These stores were huge, and neatly organised with rows of shelves containing animal food and accessories… if they sold live animals there was normally a separated corner somewhere with couple of tired-looking lop-eared rabbits in a wire-top hutch, suffering the torment of small children’s prodding fingers… or a plastic tank, far too small for an enormous litter of baby rats who had recently been born there.. some of those animals would never live to know life outside the walls of that store...

This place however was stuck in a time warp.. more like what pet stores might have been like years ago; it was small, dimly light, and crammed full of cages and tanks of various sizes, with an unpleasant smell quite unlike anything I’d ever experienced before. The whole store was alive with the clamour of a hundred different animals of all types. There were no signs on the shelves to indicate what was for sale, and no visible logic behind how the items were stored. I made my way towards the back of the shop where I saw the vague dark shape of an old woman, sat huddled on a tall stool in the middle of a dark alcove in the back of the room.
“Excuse me?” I said, raising my voice over the din of the animals, there was no answer, the woman didn’t stir to look at who had entered, I was about to speak again when a screech and a flurry of wings and feathers fluttering straight at me took me a-back. With a thud, a small, yellow bird hit me squarely in the chest then plopped to the floor like a stone. I looked down, shocked, at it’s fragile little body lying on the ground at my feet and found myself suddenly racked with guilt; Had I blocked this little beast’s desperate reach for freedom?

I bent down and scooped the bird up gently, it wasn’t dead, I could feel it’s heart beat thought my finger tips, but it lay quite still in my hands. I thought it must be unconscious so I peered closer to get a good look at it, it was then that I realised the animal had no eyes. Not only that but it seemed to have never had any.. not even empty sockets where eyes used to be. The bird had a thin chord tied around one of it’s feet which seemed to trail back to the direction of the old woman in the dark… then I noticed; she was surrounded by these strings, leading away from her in all directions… was each one connected to a tiny blind bird?

“AH! She find you! She yours now!” The sudden voice made me jump, I looked around, to see a small, slight woman with short, dark hair, who squinted up at me from behind her thick fringe.
“Ur, sorry?” I stammered. She tottered towards me and, grabbing a hold of the cord she snapped it with one swift movement. The bird instantly flittered to life and clambered it’s way up to my shoulder, where it sat, and chirped happily.
“You buy her, five dollar.. she like your voice..” the woman twittered irately, much like a caged animal herself. I felt flustered as I tried to explain that I had no interest in buying a pet, and that I had only come into the store to see if I might be permitted to photograph some of the animals there to use as reference to draw from later when I got back to my hotel…

I later found out from a helpful old man on the street that the species of bird was born completely sightless, they came from a land with few natural predators and lived in colonies so large that self-defence wasn’t really an issue for them… they were popular with pet shops in the region not only because they were very easy to catch, but also due to the instant and personal bond they formed with their owners based solely on the sound of their voice; this little girl would be with me now till her dying day, never wanting to stray away from my side for as long as I talked to her…

I left the town with my unwanted new companion feeling quite confused and unsettled.. I couldn’t even bring myself to name the bird, but found myself thinking constantly of her brothers and sisters who were stuck there still in the store.. tethered to that strange old woman who had presumably captured and bound each one of them, and was now their mistress until some other unwitting customer came and bought them too… Despite the little bird chirping cheerfully at me, I couldn’t help thinking how horrible it must be to exist in that clamour, hiding amongst the boxes and tins, completely imprisoned, and bound… sightless and flightless.

I thought, for a moment, that the story was something fictional. Then I realized it was true...was it? I'm still a bit confused over whether or not it happened. In any case, the drawing may be rough, but it captures the motion of the bird. It feels as if the lines and curves were actually moving by themselves.

Have a good day,
thestaccatobutterfly

What was the species of the bird? I'm starting to get interested in it.

Hi! - The story is basically a re-telling of the dream I had which inspired this piece (and the drawing) ... - it was very vivid and real seeming, and stayed with me for hours after waking. - The species of bird is totally fictitious, and doesn't yet have a name. :]

That's really kind of cool. The idea of the birds forming strong, spontaneous attachment based on voice alone is really quite sweet.

The pet store has quite a cool, otherworldly feel, too.

Had I block this little beast’s desperate escape for freedom? This sentence is kind of jarring, should be blocked, I think, but also "escape for freedom" is an odd phrase.

Otherwise, there's very little to pick at, its a neat little story, and the drawing is pretty cool, too.

I'm pleased you think so!! .. it's always been a problem of mine with writing; I get carried away and write reams and reams and often loose the essence of what I'm doing.. - I tried to limit myself to one side of a4 with this, in the end I couldn't keep it that short so I went slightly over, but it was an interesting challenge. I'd like to post more deviations like this in the future.. if I get the inspiration

the pet shop, along with the keeper, and the birds, were in my dreams sadly. ...not sure where in the world they were supposed to be.. I guess it didn't really matter.. not here in the UK, that's for sure!

Both image and tale very interesting. I found it quite heart warming the attachment the bird formed. But also I felt a melancholy.
Are you the bird or the shoulder?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KatCardy In reply to SiPod [2009-08-10 20:45:39 +0000 UTC]

you know... it played with my mind for ages (even after writing/drawing/posting this up) ... I normally am quite good at interpreting my dreams but couldn't work out for ages what this was about.. the bird actually disgusted me in the dream, but also made me feel sorry for it all at the same time... I think what repulsed me more was the woman in the petshop.. not the seller, but the one with the strings... I still don't claim to have got to the bottom of it but I'm now fairly certain I'm both, I'm the bird AND the shoulder.. it makes me both happy and sad at the same time to realise this. -_- .. one thing I am gratefully certain of however, is I'm NOT the bird woman, I have formed no ties to other flightless and sightless birds other than those THEY have chosen.

thanks so much for taking the time to read and comment on this, hun.

As I wrote it I suspected both was the case. Stories can be a good way to realise aspects of ourselves we're uncomfortable with. Interestingly aspects of myself I now know to be amongst my most noble, I at times viewed with both contempt and anger. Perhaps the birds are nobler than they first appear.

KatCardy In reply to SiPod [2009-08-11 09:06:45 +0000 UTC]

I think you might be on to something there you know.. buy the time I finished writing this I certainly felt a lot more for the birds than I did when I woke up.. in my dream for example I never got as far as taking her away with me (she wasn't even a her, she was just an IT .. but very definitely became female as I wrote it down) ... I totally agree with you on the story-self-exploration front, my whole webcomic "Virtual Comix" was pretty much just an exercise in me working myself out during a very tumultuous and unsettled time in my life. For that it was incredibly useful, and as you commented, I came out of it with completely different views of my different personas to what I had when I went in. (the two main character essentially swapped roles in my relation to them... I started out admiring the crazy and rash one, and punishing the "normal" or "boring" one ... by the time I'd stopped posting the strips on-line however I'd started to get things the other way around, to the point now where I really admire the previous victim, and try to keep a lid on Comix (the rash one) as much as possible. Interesting to externalize internal conflict, eh?

Yes it is. You should maybe read some Carl Jung if you haven't already. He had some very interesting inner exploration words, that also seem to reference many spiritual writings from Hinduism to Alchemy.
