Should show him the wages top artists at game developing companies earn 8D That should help.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Trandafilov In reply to AriyaEretsee [2016-04-04 20:12:00 +0000 UTC]

And what percentage is that the average artist get to that level? Probably very low. These "top artists at game development" probably make up like 0.05% of all artists.
Art is EXTREMELY competitive and, sad as it is to say, artists have more risk of crashing and burning than any other profession.ย

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

AriyaEretsee In reply to Trandafilov [2016-04-04 20:30:20 +0000 UTC]

Not arguing that arts is a rough job market, but in my "experience" parent only really care what you can earn. Convince them there is money to be had and they usually back off.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Trandafilov In reply to AriyaEretsee [2016-04-04 20:35:15 +0000 UTC]

Well, maybe it' just how I was raised and where I come form. But.. being an artist to a parent.. isn't.. something to be proud of. Unless you're making the HUGE buck, then yeah.ย
But from my experience, parents want to see their kids become something that actually benefits society; an engineer, doctor, lawyer, businessman, ect..

I am an artist myself, but I'm realistic unlike most artists. I'm sorry to say, but artists get angry when presented with the cold truth.ย
I would love to be an artist, or an animator for a living. But it's risky, insecure and doesn't bring in the money. And considering the average artist makes $40,000/annum, that is not enough to live off in today's world.ย
I decided to be an engineer and keep art as a hobby, because it's the smartest, most rational way of being financially secure in the future. Infinitely more than being an artist.

Trandafilov [2016-04-04 20:09:14 +0000 UTC]

Well, drawing is doing something..
But compared to doing like.. something in the math and sciences field, it really is doing nothing.

Cocoaprints In reply to Trandafilov [2016-04-04 21:03:20 +0000 UTC]

Last I checked, the fields you just named NEED illustrators in order to properly convey information that would otherwise only be obtained through technical words that the average person would not be able to understand. I'm not saying that being an illustrator makes a reasonable living, but having the capability of doing so makes you more desirable in the job market of these technical fields.

Thus, drawing is actually honing your talent in order to convey the technical information from your work into something that is easily understood by everyone.

(There's a reason why there is graphics departments in a lot of places.)

Trandafilov In reply to Cocoaprints [2016-04-04 22:32:51 +0000 UTC]

Aaaaand it goes back again. Illustrators need engineers and so on. .w.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Cocoaprints In reply to Trandafilov [2016-04-05 00:50:26 +0000 UTC]

I am inclined to disagree in that I feel engineers, and other technical/hardcore science people, need illustrators a lot more than illustrators need them.

An Engineer can use CAD, or something akin, but not necessarily be able to draw the final concept of the building.ย  The illustrator can more easily take the concept the engineer provides and make the final drawing.ย  However, the illustrator could also just as easily find something else to do and illustrate.

The only instance where I see your comment being 90% true is when an architect is needing to bring his/her design/vision to life because it's the engineer's job to figure the technical part out of how to make the building look like it's leaning 45 degrees sideways without falling over and being stable. Very rarely does an engineer talk an architect into changing some aspect of their design because it is physically impossible. (Example: www.tampabay.com/resources/imaโ€ฆ St. Petersburg Florida Pier.)

For instance (can't find honest blueprints but as an example) www.floorplans.com/house-plansโ€ฆ

Compare that to this: www.floorplans.com/house-plansโ€ฆ

Which gives you a better concept as to what it will look like in the end - or at least one variant of?

(I will give you your due, illustrators need engineers to manufacture our art supplies )

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Trandafilov In reply to Cocoaprints [2016-04-05 01:05:32 +0000 UTC]

Don't get me wrong, I HAVE wanted to be an artist for the longest time. However, both my uncles, who are architects (and painters, photographers, ect), and one who is a CEO of an architectural company in Doha, Qatar have begged me not to go into the arts. It's just not stable...
As much as I, myself am disappointed, it's smarter to be an engineer/doctor than an artist.ย

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Cocoaprints In reply to Trandafilov [2016-04-05 02:03:13 +0000 UTC]

And when you're forced to do art, it just saps all the fun out of it (Why I am not pursuing it as a career either.) But you bet I'm keeping my talents honed so that I can use them when I need them.

Keep arting!! and I wish you luck in your endeavors.

Don't worry, I know how this is. People seem to have a hard time understanding that which they cannot see directly before their eyes. It's ridiculous really.

I've been accused of being lazy while sitting and thinking out complex stuff, learning new skills, and generally trying my hardest. Hang in there!
