Description
my shading is nowhere near realistic but i do that on purpose, not aiming to be realistic
the normal version isn’t realistic either, it’s just it’s plain and i used to shade that way and the pics weren’t so lively

I like to think your shade style is a mix between cartoonish and realistic~ I think it looks awesome!

It is always better to vary the hue than it is to just shade with lighter and darker colour. Also, in real life, shadows are tinted based on what's around you. If you're outside, chances are that because of light reflection, the shadows on your body will be green and blue because of the coloured light bouncing off of the grass and sky.

I like seeing the different between the different shadings you have here. I like your shading more. Gives your pieces a different look. Nice work.

Your way of shading currently is so vibrant. Perhaps it may not be "realistic" but its much more visually powerful and intense.

...your shading looks more realistic too me ^^'...
also cause i dont know any situation light will fall like that (realistic shadows) and create straight coloured shadows.
Making a drawing "yours" like that is the best was too communicate your view of the world

I've always wondered what make your colours so recognizable, I didn't know it was the shading.
Good to know. One mystery less.

The "normal" method is more a "wrong" method. Choosing shadows like this makes the pic look boring. But many beginners use this until they learn better.
Your shading technique is still quite awesome though :3

It isn't "normal" shading. It's "begginers'" or "lazy" shading.

True with two exceptions: monochromatic art or grayscale art. In all other cases a good shadows and lights should be based on varying hue, saturation and brightness.

I think it sort of is. Not lazy per se, just people who don't know better (so usually beginners), who are not aware that shading should not be monotome in hue/colour.

Huh, I didn't notice that before very much. Yeah the left one is more realistic, but the right one is more unique. I like it!! Thanks for showing the highlight boxes too to show us what you do! It looks really great!

Super-kip In reply to CeryneianHind [2015-04-14 12:52:59 +0000 UTC]
It's not realistic on the left though, because in real life colours are not monotome and shadows and highlights do in fact tend to have a different tone/hue/colour than the base colour. So I would say that the one on the right is more lively, just because it is more realistic, even though it is very stylized. On the apple that is especially clear.

Do you also do this for things that aren't red or orange? For example, on the blue hair, did you also move towards purple for highlights and towards cyan for shadow?

Both apples look AMAZING anyhow haha. But still, this is very helpful. The change gives a nice glow and a pop of colour. Really awesome to see the difference and is a cool insight into the way you develop your artworks

Ah, I see. You use a wider range of hues for shading. Mine doesn't really span that big. Normally if I'm shading something that's red, for example, I'll aim for pinks and oranges. I'd never think to go to blue...hm...I should try that. Thanks kawacy!
