Description
my shading is nowhere near realistic but i do that on purpose, not aiming to be realistic
the normal version isn’t realistic either, it’s just it’s plain and i used to shade that way and the pics weren’t so lively

It's awesome colors in skin and other things like the apple are not all just one color and tones, it is a mixture of other colors combined. So this is actually very beautiful, and art never has to be realistic. It can be anything that you see, you are the artist.

This is brilliant, I love it. How you move across the color board is so effective in creating vivid and lively colors, that apple is amazing.

I would actually say that you understand how light actually works, verses the beginner idea of shading by just adding black or white.

You actually shade like impresionists form 19th century~ focusing more on colors and chroma instead of black-white varation, which is bit monotonous to me, using chromatic perspective with colors with less light in them (purple...) as shadow and ones with more (yellow...) as light gives more lively look, either warm or cold depending on the colors great job you did there discovering it on ur own

hm, didn't realize, when shading, you move diagonally downward through the coloring square. I always thought you move directly downward. Guess I've been doing it wrong all this time. Whoops. Now I see the right is the more correct way of shading. Looks like Im gonna need to change up my technique again. This should help though. Thanks.

Essentially what you're doing from a technical standpoint is making your highlights have more of an orange to red to them and your shadows have more blue.
That's using color theory right.

I kind of like the way you shade. It adds some flair and makes the colours pop really well.
I need to work on my shading. . .

Ah! That makes so much sense. I was wondering what it was that added such a lively element. It also helps with the illusion of depth. Thanks! I love it when you break things down. It truly is a science, haha.

I was taught to shade like that, which is good because I think it looks a lot better, more alive. But I could never understand how to do it on the computer, so this was awesome!

This helpful in putting your approach on shading in perspective (perspective used in a metaphorical sense).

I think "naive" would be a better word to call the "normal" shading, since that's the sort of shading used by artists who don't know any better, and there's nothing normal about it, except perhaps the fact that it's normal for an artist to shade in a naive way at some point in their development.
Your shading style is quite close to how realistic shading works, the main differences are the shadow placement, and that "what looks good" dominates the lighting that would occur in a given scene. Many artists who make "realistic" work also choose their colours "unrealistically", because it tends to lead to more appealing work.

I second that opinion. And you give great advice. Kawacy you just need to keep doing what you're doing, you're pretty good now so you'll only become greater man.

Actually your shading is realistic. I'm attending to art school and they teach us only realism there and the pure black or pure white color is compeletly banned, you can't use it for shading, and they teach us to use more different colors as well so yeah the style on the right is more realistic and proper than style on the left according to my teachers.
