Description

my shading is nowhere near realistic but i do that on purpose, not aiming to be realistic

the normal version isn’t realistic either, it’s just it’s plain and i used to shade that way and the pics weren’t so lively

I hope you did a tutorial for this. Your way of shading is really gorgeous.

Err, what you call "normal shading" is not normal shading, but actually kind of bad/lazy technique? Other people do "your shading," if all you're talking about is picking colors. I've seen many tutorials that recommend shifting the hues for highlights and shadows, as art tends to look very flat and lifeless without that. It's not a "you" thing at all.

This^^^  It's actually an old masters technique contrasting cool vs warm for lights/darks.  Even most anime does this.  Nevertheless helpful for anyone wanting to spruce up their work

i prefer your shading - it has more variation and more depth - plus it has a more orange blow which adds cheerfulness

Oooh, do you have a tutorial on how to do that? My shading (and artwork in general) leaves a lot to be desired, so I'd really love some tips or advice!

Not to deny your skill, but to call it "your shading" is somewhat cocky--a lot of people use different hues when creating value in order to construct more believable and emotional images. Again, you execute your values nicely, and I believe you definitely have a distinctive style to your work. I doubt you intended to come off as arrogant--but I just wanted to let you know this could rub a few people the wrong way.

She's not saying that she is the sole person using this style of shading, just that this is her style against the conventional style that people use.

Hm, don't really think that using one hue is conventional (although the apple looked better on the left) generally, it looks worse...

BBurtonArt In reply to darksapphiredrop [2015-04-15 16:20:14 +0000 UTC]

Keep in mind that this is off of my knowledge (what I've seen, heard, experienced): When people first are taught art, at least in school, you are told to use gradients of the same color, diluting it with black or white to get shading. It's also the first way people tend to look at shading, more light or dark, not with different hues. Obviously not everyone starts learning it this way, and not everyone uses it, but it is common enough in the art world to be A convention.

darksapphiredrop In reply to BBurtonArt [2015-04-15 16:34:10 +0000 UTC]

Hm, maybe. I thought people started with black and white or full color? But I'm mostly talking about people who start when they're
little?

BBurtonArt In reply to darksapphiredrop [2015-04-15 16:40:09 +0000 UTC]

Same here. You learn gradients in black and white in elementary and then in color up to middle school. At any point after/around that, hues are taught so that art look "richer" in color.

Yes... I suppose if you used traditional materials, you would learn this faster, and if you used digital, it might not have occurred? I guess there are a lot of factors.

I don't see it as cocky or arrogant at all. The shading of "their" artwork is "their" shading, no matter how unique or common the technique is. It implies nothing of their skill or talent to call it that. Plus, they even said that it isn't very realistic, which is very humble and modest of them. I think the only person who perceived it otherwise is you, my friend.

Your shading is a lot more vibrant and interesting to look at than your normal version. How do you decide on the colors to use for your shading? Do you just follow the wiggly line?

No wonder everything you do looks awesome!!!!
I wish apples and people would be shaded so awesomely in the real world.... wait... then your shading wouldn't be too awesome 'cuz everything would look that way, never mind.
That's why you're so awesome! . . . did I just confuse anyone?

I wouldn't necessarily say either style is "better". It's just that your style allows for more contrast in the colors.
Personally, I do like your style more, but again... I wouldn't say its "better".
But... eh. What do I know. I have mps soooo.... this opinion of my could change in an instant.
